Ana snatched her infotab off the sofa table. Her hands were shaking as she searched for Ms. Kandinsky’s contact information. Ms. Kandinsky had watched over Ana’s family on Earth for decades. She was the only one who could help. When she finally found her info, she slammed her forefinger down.

For a moment, there was nothing but silence on the line. Panic flooded Ana. It danced through her veins and made her heart slam against her rib cage.

What if Ms. Kandinsky didn’t answer? What if her number had changed?

What if she was already too late? What if they were all already dead?

She couldn’t bear it.

The infotab clicked, and Ms. Kandinsky appeared before her. She was slumped at her kitchen table, and her hair rumpled from sleep. “Do you have any idea what kind of hour it is?”

“YOU HAVE TO MOVE MY BROTHERS,” Ana shouted.

Ms. Kandinsky sat up straighter. “Slow down, doll. I need a little more information.”

“It is all I have. You have to do it. NOW.”

Why was she being so slow?

“Who passed this information to you?”

“Holden Rockwell. He’s serving as—”

“The general’s apprentice. That means the info is probably good. Unless he’s testing the boy.”

Ana didn’t want to expose Holden’s secret, but even more importantly she didn’t want to slow down to explain it. “I don’t care. Move them. And keep Holden’s name out of it.”

“Got it. We’ll call you from a safe location. It may be several days. Even a week. Consider no word, good word.”

“Please take care of them,” she whimpered.

“I’ll do everything within my power, doll. You know that.”

Ana nodded. “Thank you.”

Ms. Kandinsky ended the call.
