Archon

Archon scanned the meager campsite they would be using for the night. With nothing of real concern left to attend to, he knew it was time to work. Mentally triggering his implant, he closed his eyes to better handle the next steps. The cold sensation running down his back was nothing new to him.

For the first time in a long time, it felt unnatural. The sound of his breathing sounded loud in his ears. The sound came from multiple sources that overlapped, becoming one. Before his body could take in the next breath, the world fell away.

The sensation of falling through a void rushed in, encapsulating the mental landscape he found himself in. Ones and zeros flashed across his vision, startlingly bright against the all-encompassing blackness that held him in its grasp. Time crawled along at a snail’s pace as he waited for the implant to connect to the satellites above. Fear started to creep in, so unlike any previous time. Bright white letters scrolled across the darkness.

Connection acknowledged.

Login by Subject: 42. It is nice to see you check in.

Reflexively, Archon tensed his jaw, unsure if the nerve signals were even registering. Not for the first time did he wonder if he would ever be acknowledged by the name he had given himself. Was he always going to be seen as a test subject in the grand scheme of things? His training kicked in before he could go further into that thought process. He didn’t want them to pick up on those feelings.

“I’m reporting in, Control. Signal seems slow. Is there something wrong on your end?”

This is Control. Subject: 42, you should not worry. All things skyward appear to be greenlit. Signal disruption could result from recent experiments.

“What experiments? Why wasn’t I told about this? Am I within the projected area for this experiment?”

Not important. Report…

Archon mentally imagined taking a deep breath so he could settle his mind. There had been many times he wanted to yell at Control in frustration, but that was how you ended up getting your position changed in the group... and not in a good way.

Finding the ability to focus, he prepared his statement mentally before saying, “All appears clear. I haven’t noticed any signs I’m being followed. Currently I’m bringing in a test subject due to all the specimen containers being filled. The subject I have with me appears to be mentally intact. No physical signs of genetic damage in any meaningful way. I also have an issue: two of the sentry bots seem to be breaking down. I haven’t run diagnostics yet as I’m not in a safe zone.”

Subject: 42, are you purposefully trying to mislead us or... are you not aware?

Surprise left Archon with a chill far deeper than the implant ever imparted within him. Thinking back over the last month, he had seen no sign of anyone or anything following him. Even the two subjects he had brought with him for a short time after the culling were in no shape to follow him once he was done with them.
