CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

“Having trouble working up the courage?” Jameson asked from the passenger seat beside Becca in the cockpit of a kestrel.

“What?” She glanced at him as Las Vegas appeared on the sun-drenched horizon. It had been a long week of getting things done, but they were almost ready to finalize the transfer of the Hoover Dam’s power to the city. With that, Becca’s supervision was no longer needed.

Now she was almost home.

“You never gave your guy his hat.” Jameson gestured to the cowboy hat that she had left sitting above the kestrel’s controls.

“Oh,” Becca blew out a sigh. “Mason headed back with the last transport of the dam’s people. I didn’t have time before he left. I’m sure he’ll be waiting when we land, I’ll give it to him then.”

“Ah. I see.” Jameson leaned back in his seat.

“You see what?” Becca glowered at his reflection in the cockpit window.

“Nothing.” The old man shrugged in a way that contradicted his answer.

The old vet had been a huge help in everything concerning the dam’s power supply and the people living within it. He’d also gotten a little too friendly.

“What do you mean, nothing?” She rotated her head, slowly, until her glower was pointed directly at him.

“Well, it’s not my place to say, but it seemed like you had plenty of time before Mason left with the transport.” He reached out and grabbed the hat off the console and placed it on his head. “You could have talked to him.”

“Yeah, well, I didn’t.” Becca rolled her eyes.

He was right, she could have talked to him. Actually, she had planned to. There had been a lot of time for thinking the last few days and when everything was considered, she did love him. In fact, her plan had been to give him the stupid hat and slip in a quiet ‘love ya’ when he inevitably laughed at the gift.

Of course that raised the question, why hadn’t she?

Well, the answer to that was she was a giant awkward idiot, and every time she tried, she ended up chickening out. It just wasn’t easy to put herself out there. She was so bad off that the only one that might have understood where she was coming from was Digby.

An image of the zombie laying on the floor of the high-roller suite flashed through her head as she thought of the zombie. It was weirdly annoying how much she missed having him around. He might have been a jerk, but he was a reliable jerk, and he meant well. Not to mention he would never have let her indulge the fear that kept her from talking to Mason. No, he would have blurted something out that forced the situation into the light.

Becca chewed on her bottom lip as she shook off the thought.

Of course, Jameson’s immediacy brought it all right back.

“So what’s the plan? You gonna run into Mason’s arms when we land? Maybe give him a kiss and tell him you love him?”

Becca let out a long groan and let her head fall back against the headrest of her seat.
