ROYALâS BLOOD
Chapter 11
A meaty fist crashed into Benâs jaw, making him see stars. Reeling a few painful seconds, he gave his head a hard shake, then spit sour globs of blood and saliva onto the concrete floor of the interrogation room.
âDoes that jog your memory now, mongrel?â the burly sergeant growled.
Ben glared up at the enforcer with dark glowing green eyes. He was bound hand and foot to a metal chair bolted to the floor, while the man pummeled him with cheap shots. It was overkill that two other enforcers stood behind him to finish the job when the first one was winded.
He expected the rough questioning, of course. But these sadistic gorillas were enjoying their task a little too much. This was one of the rare times he wished he could disclose his true identity just to watch the three bastards drop to their knees and beg his forgiveness.
Still, his true mission was too important. He just hoped to keep most of his teeth in the process.
âPerhaps I just caught the wrong flight, is all,â Ben said. âIf youâll just take me back to the airportââ
âPerhaps Iâll beat the living shit out of you, dog. One last timeâwhere do come from, and why are you here in Bryant territory?â
Ben spat another mouthful of blood onto the floor, then gave the man a wicked, bloody grin.
âWeel now,â he said, broadening his accent. âMe dear muther assures me that I came straight from her blessed womb, and Iâm here in Washington State to take in a little of the Lavender Festival. I heard their homemade soaps and lotions are divine.â
The iron crack on his jaw nearly split it in two and made Ben see double for several blurry seconds.
âOkay, fine,â he huffed, giving his head another hard shake to clear his vision. âIt wonât please you to know it, but Iâll tell you what you want.â
âSpeak, dog.â
Ben swallowed hard, then let out a breath and hung his head. âIâve just come from Dublin. You can check the flight manifest.â
âWe have. Why are you here?â
Ben frowned up at the sergeant. âIâve vowed on pain of death not to tell anyone but your High Alpha and his Council.â
âTell me now orââ
âTell Jake Bryant that I must speak with him immediately,â Ben continued. âItâs about the future wellbeing of this pack. Tell him that the message comes straight from the Firestone herself.â
* * *
Enforcers gripped both of Benâs biceps as they roughly marched him down the basement corridor to the freight elevator. They took it up three stories. Then he was marched through more hallways, passing office after office until reaching the largest one at the end of the building.
Inside stood Neil Bryant, the packâs Prime Enforcer, along with five other men hovering together along the rear window. But it was the suited man with dark blond hair and steely cobalt eyes honing in on him that made Ben reflexively straighten.
âLeave us,â Jake Bryant ordered his guards.
Snapping a salute, they exited and closed the doors behind them.
