Chapter Twelve
PRINCE OLIVER
The moment Grace entered the art studio, I could feel the nervous energy surrounding her like a dark cloud. It was a stark contrast to her fun and flirty demeanor from the night before, but I would do my best to get her to relax. It was just a portrait, after all. Nothing more.
âYou look absolutely beautiful in that dress,â I said.
âThank you,â she replied shyly as she nervously fidgeted with the hem of her dress, then glanced around the room, avoiding eye contact with me.
âThereâs no need to be nervous,â I said.
âI canât help itâI am,â Grace replied.
âFair enough,â I said. âLetâs see if we can do something about that.â
An idea struck me that would surely cut through this awkward tension. There was no way we could work under these conditions.
âGrace, letâs try something,â I said, motioning her to the center of the room. âThis is an icebreaker to get us out of our heads. Humor me and strike an exaggerated pose. The more theatrical, the better.â
âSeriously?â she asked.
âThis will relax us bothâtrust me,â I said. âGive me your most dramatic gesture possible. Channel your inner Broadway diva, if youâd like.â
She grinned, appearing more open to the idea. âI think I can do that.â
Grace cleared her throat and struck a pose worthy of the Bolshoi Ballet, leg kicked in the air, one arm curved gracefully over her head, the other resting on her hip. She batted her eyelashes at me as she wobbled in place, struggling not to burst into giggles or fall over.
âYesâI think youâve got something there.â I pretended to scrutinize her posture studiously. âNow, can you hold that position for three to four hours?â
That did itâGrace finally laughed, but then her arms flailed in the air as she teetered sideways.
Stepping to her, I scooped her into my arms.
Now we were both cackling uncontrollably.
âLooks like my trick worked,â I said, still holding her. âYou look much more relaxed now.â
She nodded. âI guess I am.â
I was about to release her from my arms when there was a knock, then the studio door opened.
Dante stepped inside and froze, mouth agape. âOh, dear . . .â His gaze shot upward to the ceiling. âSorry for the intrusion, Your Highness. I was looking to reschedule your appointment, but it can wait until, well, whenever.â He backed out, colliding with the door frame before making his flustered escape.
I finally released Grace and shook my head in amusement at Danteâs reaction. âThatâs the second time heâs walked in on us like that.â
She straightened her dress. âCareful, or heâs going to think thereâs something going on between us.â
âImagine that,â I said, trying not to imagine that. âAnyway, we should get started.â I asked Grace to sit in the chaise lounge near the window where the light was best. âNow, I just need a little something to set the mood. I like to listen to music while I paint. I hope you donât mind.â
âNot at all,â Grace said, taking a seat on the chaise lounge.
