Nevick walked into the crowd towards Deana, while villagers rushed forward to shake his hand, hug him and offer up congratulatory messages along the way. Mitchell approached him and smiled. “Congratulations, my friend,” he said. “She’s a wonderful girl.”

Michael came up and gave Nevick a weak punch in the left arm. “I have to say I’m jealous of you. She’s definitely a looker.” All three of them shared a laugh.

Through all the commotion, no one saw a small boy of three years, inching closer and closer to the bonfire’s edge. Nevick noticed him out of the corner of one eye, a fraction of a second too late as he reached a hand toward the dancing flames, as though they were some foreign forbidden toy, and immediately recoiled. The toddler screamed and fell backward.

Nevick moved like the wind and was at the boy’s side in an instant. The youngster clutched his reddened hand as tears poured down his chubby face like twin rivers. The hand had been horribly burned, but the child had not caught fire. Nevick breathed a small sigh of relief for that.

“You have to let me see your hand,” he insisted. The boy’s parents rushed over, toward their son.

“Hold on,” Mitchell said, stopping the father, “let him do this.”

Soon, every eye in the village was on the screaming child who Nevick held in his arms at the base of the enormous blaze. Blisters rose up from the boy’s ruined flesh. If something wasn’t done immediately, it would be damaged for life.

“Deana!” he screamed into the crowd. “Deana, I need you now!” She was the only one in the village who could give the boy the help he needed.
