The Ex-Wife
âIâm not sure I want to do this,â Amy said.
âItâs the nice thing to do,â Heather responded.
âI know. But Iâm not sure I want to be nice.â
The two women were taking some Pistachio Rose Donuts to the police station for Chief Chet. Heather thought it was important that they remain on good terms with the chief. They might not appreciate that he wasnât allowing them to assist with murder cases, but they knew that he wasnât really doing it to spite them. He was still Ryanâs boss. He was also the father of Lillyâs best friend on the island. Heather didnât want this to cause a rift between them.
She came to the station to extend the olive branch in donut form. However, before she could meet Chief Chet at the station, she ran into Ryan and Peters.
âWhat are you doing here?â Peters asked, looking around to see if they were noticed yet.
âWe brought Chief Chet some donuts to prove that we donât have any hard feelings,â said Heather.
âWell, I do have hard feelings,â said Amy. âBut Iâm trying to play nice.â
âSo, you donât know?â Peters asked.
âWhat?â asked Heather.
âThe victimâs ex-wife is about to visit the station to talk with us,â Ryan explained. âHolly Lander should be here any minute.â
âWell, we can wait in the chiefâs office, or we can drop the donuts and run,â said Amy.
âWe werenât trying to interfere,â Heather said. âBut we did just learn about the ex-wife as part of our missing flipper investigation. She might still have a key to her ex-husbandâs lab.â
Ryan and Peters exchanged a look.
âI donât know how long we can keep this up,â Ryan said. âBut we could press our luck a little further.â
âI think we owe it to them,â said Peters.
âAnd we could tell Chief Chet that they were working on their own theft case that they were hired to investigate.â
âAnd then we can give him donuts.â
âWhatâs your plan?â asked Heather.
âWhy donât you wait for Chief Chet to give him your donuts over by the two-way mirror?â Ryan suggested. âIf you just happen to overhear our conversation with Mrs. Lander, then so be it.â
âI like the way you think,â Amy said. âAnd I think you both deserve a donut for your work.â
The detectives happily accepted a Pistachio Rose Donut. Peters commented on how he thought these might make a romantic gift for his girlfriend, Hope.
Then, Holly Lander entered the station. From the moment she appeared, Heather sensed she had a flair for the dramatic. She had a scarf around her neck that she liked to swish. She had large sunglasses on that she removed to show puffy eyes beneath as soon as she reached the officers.
âIâm Holly Lander. And Iâve come to talk to you about my dead husband.â
âThank you for coming in,â Ryan said. âWonât you follow us?â
He led Mrs. Lander into the interrogation room. Heather and Amy found their spot on the other side of the two-way mirror so they could watch. However, they kept the box of
