The Ex-Wife

“I’m not sure I want to do this,” Amy said.

“It’s the nice thing to do,” Heather responded.

“I know. But I’m not sure I want to be nice.”

The two women were taking some Pistachio Rose Donuts to the police station for Chief Chet. Heather thought it was important that they remain on good terms with the chief. They might not appreciate that he wasn’t allowing them to assist with murder cases, but they knew that he wasn’t really doing it to spite them. He was still Ryan’s boss. He was also the father of Lilly’s best friend on the island. Heather didn’t want this to cause a rift between them.

She came to the station to extend the olive branch in donut form. However, before she could meet Chief Chet at the station, she ran into Ryan and Peters.

“What are you doing here?” Peters asked, looking around to see if they were noticed yet.

“We brought Chief Chet some donuts to prove that we don’t have any hard feelings,” said Heather.

“Well, I do have hard feelings,” said Amy. “But I’m trying to play nice.”

“So, you don’t know?” Peters asked.

Ryan and Peters exchanged a look.

“I don’t know how long we can keep this up,” Ryan said. “But we could press our luck a little further.”

“I think we owe it to them,” said Peters.

“And we could tell Chief Chet that they were working on their own theft case that they were hired to investigate.”

“And then we can give him donuts.”

“What’s your plan?” asked Heather.

“Why don’t you wait for Chief Chet to give him your donuts over by the two-way mirror?” Ryan suggested. “If you just happen to overhear our conversation with Mrs. Lander, then so be it.”

“I like the way you think,” Amy said. “And I think you both deserve a donut for your work.”

The detectives happily accepted a Pistachio Rose Donut. Peters commented on how he thought these might make a romantic gift for his girlfriend, Hope.

Then, Holly Lander entered the station. From the moment she appeared, Heather sensed she had a flair for the dramatic. She had a scarf around her neck that she liked to swish. She had large sunglasses on that she removed to show puffy eyes beneath as soon as she reached the officers.

“I’m Holly Lander. And I’ve come to talk to you about my dead husband.”

“Thank you for coming in,” Ryan said. “Won’t you follow us?”

He led Mrs. Lander into the interrogation room. Heather and Amy found their spot on the other side of the two-way mirror so they could watch. However, they kept the box of
