Moorehead and Velasquez-DeBois were, Oliver determined after a cursory inquiry of public databases, a legitimate if slightly-inclined-to-interpret-cultural-patrimony-as-narrowly-as-possible art dealership and legal team, just as Mr. Goodspeed had implied them to be. Public face matches up, check. Oliver hadn’t expected it not to. A man like

(the man in the lights)

Goodspeed had too much money and too much annoying mysterious intrigue to him to show up in China Lake and be outright lying. It would be the private face of Moorehead and Velasquez-DeBois that held the lie. Or the private face of Goodspeed, if that was in fact the man’s name. Oliver couldn’t find evidence of him anywhere on the company’s web presence; querying the Los Angeles Public Information AI got him four Alec Goodspeeds, none of whom looked like the one he’d talked to.

False name, real company?

False name, not attached to the real company, using it for access? Oliver hadn’t given him much access. (Except to inadvertently point him towards Rose House and Maritza locked in there with the dead—)

False name, true attachment, false mission. That was more like it. Try this: Moorehead and Velasquez-DeBois had some business with those plans for unbuilt cities in Rose House’s archive, and they’d sent a man, not to talk to Dr. Gisil, but to get inside and have those plans removed. Maybe they’d sent a man who’d died there, and now they’d sent another.

Oliver pressed his fingers between his eyes, rubbing at the tension headache growing there. Typed Brasilia into his computer, gazed at the scroll of useless information. Deleted it, tried Brasilia + Basit Deniau and got a slew of academic bullshit. Tried once more: Brasilia + ‘Basit Deniau’ + ‘cities that dream awake’ – ‘Le Corbusier’ + lawsuit – ‘smart city’. That ought to get rid of last century’s obsessions—

And stared at the first record in the search, his jaw snapping shut inside his skull.

Pressed the speed dial button on his wristphone and hoped to whatever God there was that Maritza would pick up.
