* * *

It took Viv over an hour to summon up the courage to go to the address Daniel had given her; it was in a small part of the port that respectable people avoided. She put on her baggy coat and tied a large headscarf under her chin. She was trembling as she made her way through the narrow streets, her hands clamped tight in her pockets, her short ragged nails biting into her palms. When she got there she went numb, standing like a block of stone a few feet away, staring at the low black-painted door of a dismal cottage, terrified of what would happen to her if she stepped inside it. People passed by and stared curiously.

A rough looking man in ragged clothes, stinking of stale alcohol and sweat, asked her if she was lost.

‘Yes, totally lost,’ she murmured.

‘Tell me who you’re looking for, my luvver, and I might be able to help ’ee.’ He moved in close and put his arm round her shoulders.

‘Bugger off or I’ll scream the sodding place down,’ she spat at him.

Startled, the man didn’t hang about.

Viv knew she couldn’t stay here. She wasn’t sure what an abortion entailed exactly but knew that after a short time in the cottage, some agonising pain and bleeding, her ‘problem’ would be over. No one but her and Daniel and Aggie Crabb would ever know, and neither of them would tell anyone about it – or worry that it could put her life at risk. She was terrified but it had to be done; there was no alternative.

She willed her legs to take her to the door. There was a crooked iron knocker on the flaking paint. She must act quickly; if someone saw her going in here they might guess her reason.

Viv’s hand stretched up, as if in slow motion. She lifted the knocker, then a terrible longing came over her, hitting her like a freak wave, permeating her every sense and emotion. From the moment she’d realised she was in trouble she hadn’t given one thought to the third person involved in her dilemma. Now it was as if her baby was begging to be allowed to live. Dropping the knocker, which clanked noisily against the door, she turned and fled.
