Drawing of Trent University campus architecture by Bob Montgomery, showing Faryon Bridge and Bata Library. Paul then worked with engineer Roland Bergmann of the Yolles Partnership on one of most defining forms of the campus: the Reginald Faryon Bridge. The bridge was to arc across the river, uniting the two halves of the campus. Ron knew how important its visual presence would be. He told Morden Yolles his most important criterion: to ensure that it doesn’t look like it was designed by an engineer.

Paul and Roland worked collaboratively to devise a support system that would work with the curve of the Otonabee River. They designed the abutments as parabolic curves, which would look dramatic and also make structural sense. Architect Barry Griblin, whom Paul had recently recruited from Vancouver, then designed the upper zone of the bridge, echoing the parabolic forms below with a balustrade whose gentle curvilinearity would evoke a contemporary art nouveau.16
