Arie didn’t see Annabelle all day. Nor did he want to. He spent most of his day in his office at Aphrodite’s, finalizing his plans. If all went well, they should be able to pull off the theft by the end of the month.

Everything, however, had to be perfect. There would be no second chances, so all had to be in place before he went forward.

This was not the time for distractions. Especially not a distraction that came in the form of a beautiful woman who somehow saw within him places he had kept hidden from everyone else for the entirety of his life.

When he finally came home that night, he called for dinner alone, in his library which doubled as his study. His house was large by St. Giles standards, but it was still no Mayfair mansion.

He had just finished eating when the door opened, and in walked the woman he had been trying to push from his mind for the entire day.

“Annabelle,” he said, leaning back in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest in an attempt to hide what she was doing to him. “Can I help you with something?”

She glanced over at the fireplace, where two chairs sat in front of it. The odd time that he took a moment to relax with a glass of brandy, it was where he sat. It just didn’t happen frequently, not when he had so much else to look after.

“Would you sit with me for a minute?” she asked.

“Fine,” he said, crossing the room, pouring himself a drink. “Would you like one?” He held up the bottle of brandy.

“I suppose,” she said, surprising him, and he poured and passed it to her before taking the chair across from her. He sipped at his drink, staring into the fire as he waited for her to get to whatever point she wanted to make.

“I went to the museum today.”

Well, that wasn’t what he had been expecting.

“Did you?”

“Yes,” she said, looking down at her drink as she ran her finger around the rim of the glass. “It was… interesting. Having time to actually study the sculptures showed me just how amazing they are. I can only imagine how impressive they must have been when they were housed where they belonged.”

“They were,” he said, her words taking him back in time to when he had been a child, his father showing him the impressive displays that he took care of every day. “They were already damaged, of course, when I saw them. The effects of war and weather had taken their toll. I can understand the thought that they would be better preserved elsewhere, but Greece could have found them a new home.”

“I’m sure they could,” she said. “They belong to the land of their history.”

“So you understand why I am doing this, then?” he asked, looking at her, scared by how much he needed her approval and understanding in this.

“I do,” she said with a small nod. “I also watched the attendants today.
