Chapter 19
Carl having had medical training in the army tended to the wounded farmers for the night with the help of Hope. They were thankful that some of the supplies Luke had picked up from Terebinth were medical supplies. Many of the wounds of the farmers were superficial and not life threatening though some were beyond their ability to help. They saw to the burns and superficial shots the farmers had suffered. Strange to Carl, Hope and Luke was that most of the shots from the raiders were shots to stun. Evidently the Gimtis planned to capture and enslave them since dead slaves aren’t productive workers. The farmers died from the kill shots in the battle after Luke had fired upon the Gimtis from The Hornets Nest.
Luke and Eli dug the graves for the dead farmers and performed burial ceremonies. Eli and the farmers strongly requested for Luke to conduct the funeral services since he wore the robe of a priest. When the farmers saw that even though Luke was shot and even more so after he didn't die from the sword of the Gimti Captain, they believed that he was more than just a priest, but a savior for the people. Many wondered if he wasn’t even El-Gibhor walking amongst them in human form. Whenever Luke around the settlement the people of Splendor 4 hushed in reverence.
Luke had been to several burials where a priest officiated but that was many years ago when he was a child. On Bethel 5 where the Shepherds lived, priests only came by with rarity and were rarely available for the more common burials that came with old age and accidents.
Luke’s ceremony was a mixture of the sayings and ceremony he’d seen his father conduct. His father, as the Elder of Bethel 5, always took the lead in the burial ceremonies as was the custom of the Twelve Clans. Luke felt inadequate for the task, but he thought about the last few events of his life and not once had he felt capable for the tasks at hand.
Luke’s thoughts pondered whether he would be here today had he not rescued The Royal Bridge being attacked by the Gimtis. He wondered too if he wouldn’t have entered a military temple where the High Priest of the Twelve Clans had prayed for him. He gave thoughts to the ion blaster, the ion saber, and the red robe and wondered if he was up for the task. And he wondered still if he hadn’t walked through those events whether he’d have Lady Hope under his care and watchful eye. The Elders always spoke of the promises of El-Gibhor leading and directing the steps of his people, and he wondered at that thought what peril would come to him when the knowledge of him helping Hope flee became known.
Luke watched her as much as he could. His anger at her had drifted as he watched her tenderness with the farmers. She never complained in tending the wounded and comforting those who’d lost their family members in the raid.
