"Well, don't mind, then, if I eat one in front of you." She rose from her seat and walked over to the hot plate on her counter, where she spooned something from a pan into a pink plastic bowl. It was brown and looked like mud.

"So, how are you feeling these days?" asked Figman. He was glad Poe Titus had left; his departure confirmed, more or less, a home elsewhere.

"I feel fine, Louis. How do you feel?"

"Fine," he said. " Never better." A breeze blew in through the open door. The sky had turned somber.
