CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Weeks have passed since I left my wife inside the robot’s city. Though I’ve never once stopped worrying about her, that worry has changed, devolved into a fear that doesn’t even seem real anymore. But once we emerge from the second part of the Endless Forest – once I know there’ll be no more trees in front of us – impatience returns to me in full force.

Robotropolis is close now, so close that I could run off on my own and be there within a few days, maybe less. Though our destination is nearly at hand, the humans have to deal with their physical frailties, which couldn’t come at a worse time. Regina, Ward and Wyatt stumble across the empty lands like zombies, the lack of food and water causing them to waste away after only a few days of going without. I should feel sorry for them – or make it my priority to search for a water source – but I can’t help feeling annoyed by their slowness. It doesn’t help that I constantly try to move a little quicker with the hopes that they’ll push themselves to keep up.

My wife must be so close and 38’s patience must be so thin that every slow step we take is torturous. So when we finally cross a large open plain and climb the high ridge just beyond, it’s shocking that I’m the one stopping the humans from running forward.

“Don’t, especially during the day,” I say. “You might not see it but dozens of robots are working those fields.”

Regina and Ward look to be on the verge of tears but Wyatt nods, holding his arm in front of the youngsters, who look like they might take off running despite my warning. Relief should be the first thing we all feel since our long journey has finally reached its destination. But the fields of food prove too distracting for the three humans on the verge of starvation.

Plus, there’s the little fact that we still have to get through the field of robots unseen, find a way into Robotropolis and… oh, by the way… figure out how to take control of the city and save all of humankind.

“We wait until dark,” I whisper. “It’s only a few more hours.”

“I don’t know if I can make it that long,” the princess says weakly. “There’s food – actual food – right there. I don’t know if I’ll survive a few more hours.”

She’s so weak that she can barely stand. Normally I’d feel sorry for her, but I’m too tired – at least emotionally – to care very much. Regina has never once complained without reason or whined incessantly so part of me realizes her demeanor is no act. Still, that does nothing to change my mind.

“Then don’t survive,” I snap. “It’s not worth the risk to us all to charge down there and get caught so you can chomp on a few carrots.”

The princess conjures little more than a glare in my direction, though Ward makes a show of trying to get by the group.
