CHAPTER 14

Chris placed the silver tea tray on the coffee table in front of Meagan and handed her a cup of tea. After personally adding a special dollop of honey, he carried a cup over to Emily, who was still comfortably ensconced in his chair, before returning to sit on the couch next to his guest.

Hyperion was lying on the hearthrug by the fire in what Emily thought of as The Sphinx Pose. He’d politely declined both a saucer of milk and a bowl of tea. He yawned hugely when she looked over, revealing an impressive dental arsenal. She shuddered to think what he could do with them and the claws concealed within his paws. If she’d been Wahl, she’d have wet herself and sincerely promised him anything he wanted.

“So, how can we be sure it worked?” Meagan asked, bringing the conversation back around to the most important topic. “Because, from my point of view, nothing has happened.”

“The whole situation is a bit complicated,” Hyperion admitted. “And I had to come up with some of the plan on the spur of the moment since Chris wasn’t totally forthcoming about Emily’s powers.”

“Again,” Chris interrupted. “Emily’s secrets are not for me to be spreading around. I know it was inconvenient, but it would have been betraying a trust.”

“Oh, don’t take it wrong,” the cat insisted. “You were absolutely right. Discretion is something far too few of you humans possess. But, right or wrong, it made things more difficult. Of course, we already knew we had to get Kristina to give us a lift if we were going to get to Indiana and back in time, so we’d already arranged for her to be free this evening. But the rest of the plan was mostly hacked together at the last second.

“For it to make any sense, you have to remember there are two separate timelines involved. The first, in which Emily didn’t time travel, required me to go to the park and temporarily inconvenience a squirrel.”

“Yes, and I have a bone to pick with you on that,” Emily interjected. “You killed a squirrel. Chris told you to find a dead one, not kill it.”

“I refuse to apologize,” Hyperion replied bluntly. “First of all, they’re just rats with a good PR firm. Second, finding one someone else killed wouldn’t have made its death any better. Third, it wasn’t killed. As I said, it was temporarily inconvenienced. It’s alive and well, right now, getting other squirrels to give it acorns in exchange for its story. Fourth, the true crime here is that I didn’t get to eat it in either timeline. You have no idea how tasty they are. Second only to those ugly little pug dogs. A little salt and malt vinegar and — but I’m getting off track.”

“And,” interrupted Meagan, “I have explained the concept of pets.”

“Yes, yes,” Hyperion agreed, waving a paw in a distinctly human-like fashion. “These animals are for eating, and those are just decorative. I’ve already given you my word.
