Klaus stepped over the woman’s body. His heart raced when he saw Colm. The fact he missed thrilled him. He wanted the man to feel a surge of fear before he died, a sense of his own mortality as he fled through the building with nowhere to go. The Veldon ensured he wouldn’t have an easy way off the planet.

Certainly not one that got him out of there fast. The various ships needed to stockpile supplies, bring as many people as they could, and none of them would be racing away because a hysterical fool started shouting at them. All of which meant Colm would finally meet the fate he worked so hard to deserve.

Technicians hustled about in the next room. When he entered, one of them screamed. They rushed for the door. Klaus grabbed a woman with his free hand, spinning her away from the crowd to slam her into the wall. One of her colleagues charged to help her, shouting with his hands raised in the air.

Klaus shot him in the face, wringing a second scream from his hostage. He pressed the barrel of his weapon against her chin. The heat made her skin sizzle. Tears poured from her eyes, she struggled, crying out again and again.

“Shut up!” Klaus bellowed. “Where’d Colm go? McCall! Where’d he go?”

“I don’t know!” She wailed, sobbing hysterically. “I don’t know! Please, I don’t!”

“Think!” Klaus shook her. “Tell me which way he went! Where can a coward hide in this building?”

“Probably there!” She gestured to the door on the opposite side of the room. “His office is to the left! He went with Ralarn!”

“So he’s not alone?”

She shook her head. “No, it’s a Korla scientist we work with! Please let me go! I didn’t do anything to you!”

“No.” Klaus shot her in the chin. Her cries stopped immediately as he let her corpse drop to the floor. He backed away then hurried toward the door she indicated. The rest of the technicians had gone. None stayed behind; none of them attempted anything except to save themselves.

Only one of them bothered to try to help her. Typical scientists. All cowards unless they’ve got someone strapped down, ready to employ their ridiculous experiments.

He paced through the door, slowing down as he emerged into a dark hallway. Footsteps up ahead caught his attention. They made good time but didn’t seem to be running as fast as he expected.

Klaus picked up the pace, keeping his weapon aimed as he moved. Alright, McCall. The game begins now. Can you get out of the building before I find you? Will the Veldon’s arrival offer you some hope? Or have they condemned you with their presence? No matter what you think, you die today.
