“I’m Lieutenant Rogers. Michael Rogers.”

Naomi smiled. “Nice to meet you. I recognize you as well. You’re one of the Commander’s right-hand folks.”

Rogers inclined his head. “Been with the Resistance for a few years now.”

Jax leaned in. “You’ve seen this dude before?”

She smirked. “Down boy.”

He made a face.

“Sir, the mission,” the man named Abdallah called out. He was clutching a data tablet in one hand.

Rogers nodded. He joined Abdallah, checking over whatever was on the tablet’s screen.

“What mission?” Kori asked, turning to Marshall.

The bigger Delphino shrugged. “Beats me. We just ran cargo. Never left the hangar deck.”

Steve nodded. “Yeah. No one mentioned anything to us, or any of the cargo ships, about any mission. They just said, get out of here. So, we got.”

“After the cabbages were unloaded,” Marshall added in a low voice. His brother glared at him.

Jax looked up as a pair of strike fighters roared overhead, another pair on their tails. One of the fighters launched a missile, the sound deafening to those below.

Naomi looked around the group. “This is so damn weird.” She focused on Jax. “Did you ever get the impression they were in a position to go head-to-head?”

Jax shook his head. “I never really paid much attention.”

She rolled her eyes.

Steven looked at Jax, then at Naomi. “To answer your question, no.”

Marshall shook his head. “I dunno. Remember two trips ago? We were pretty sure we were hauling munitions, and there were a lot of ships coming and going.”

Jax’s mouth was hanging open. He composed himself. “Munitions?” He looked at Naomi.

“Musta been one of the jobs we turned down.” She shrugged.

“Dodged that…well, bullet,” Jax said.

Rogers walked back over to the group, his expression like he’d just swallowed a bug. “I need to ask for your help.”

“With your mission?” Marshall asked.

Jax looked at him. “No, with picking his next vacation home.” He shook his head.

Marshall punched Jax in the shoulder.

“Boys!” Kori growled.

Lieutenant Rogers and Abdallah watched, exchanging uneasy glances. The former cleared his throat. “The Empire has a research facility here on Gael. Actually, it was an Alliance facility first. Abandoned at the end of the war.”

Naomi nodded. “That makes sense.” She looked at Jax. “Those folks we met while shopping woulda lit this jungle on fire if they knew there was an Imperial facility here.”

Jax nodded. “But how could the Empire hide something like that?”

Steve shrugged. “Most systems have at least moderate official Imperial traffic. A few shuttles here and there over years, diverting to this empty jungle…I could see it working.”

Rogers released a growl. “If I may?” He was already tired of these bantering civilians.

Kori scowled at the men in her group. “Please.” She turned to Rogers, smiling.

“The entire reason we’re here is the facility. We learned about it six months ago. We’ve been planning this since then. Our intel is that,” he nodded to Steve, “they slipped the resources in quietly over time once they found it. The Empire is patient.”

Abdallah leaned in. “Sir, are you sure?”

Rogers nodded. “We don’t have the manpower to continue the mission.
