Chapter 25: Arms Race

After last night’s strategy meeting about the dark Cinthians, Remedy went back to his room and was asleep in the king-sized bed in just minutes. He is up before dawn and just stepping out of the bathroom after another shower, when Carol enters his suite carrying his newly washed clothes. “Thank you, Carol. Clean clothes are a wonderful luxury that I hope to get reacquainted with.”

Carol smiles and says “me too. I want to thank you personally for reestablishing all the utilities for us. The number of requests to stay at the mansion have grown from zero to hundreds in less than 24 hours. “Remedy laughs “have Lewis call AET in Buford and order more of the utility kits for other buildings in the Zone. AET has already set up some trade with Chattanooga and I don’t see why they can’t come here as well. They will welcome the opportunity to trade with Asheville.” “I’ll do that Remedy, Thanks for the tip.”

Remedy grabs some breakfast in the kitchen behind the banquet hall and is just finishing up when Lewis enters the room. Lewis doesn’t look like he slept much last night, so Remedy asks, “What’s wrong Lewis?”

“It’s the dark Cinthian that we have as a prisoner. I am going to have to deal with that today if I am going to avoid mob justice. I’m just not sure what to do.”

Remedy says “The world has changed overnight. It is much more dangerous than before. I think that you focus on justice, but if a person is guilty the punishment should be a clear deterrent to stop others from doing the same thing and it should be swift.”

“I agree Remedy, we can’t afford to coddle people who have killed others. It’s just such a big departure from what the US legal system morphed into.” “You’re a good man Lewis, get the facts, make a good decision, and make sure justice is done. If it helps you to know, Summer and Sara are planning to convene a conference of leaders from all of the zones. We need to have a common system of justice and a more lasting framework for our legal system.”

“It doesn’t help you today but know that I will also be there during the trial and I will support your decision.” Carol enters the room as their conversation ends to bring Lewis some hot breakfast from the stove, and Remedy takes that opportunity to head over to the machine shop and start some of his projects.

Matt and Mindy are both in the machine shop when Remedy arrives and by their very close proximity to each other and Mindy’s blush, they were probably enjoying some quiet time together.

Remedy pretends not to notice and moves over to several piles of materials near a solid workbench. Remedy gathers some of the sand, charcoal, and aluminum and is about to get started when he notices that Matt and Mindy are looking at him.

Mindy looks tentative at first but when she speaks, she becomes determined.
