SIXTEEN

“Veni, vidi, vici. I came; I saw; I conquered.”—Julius Caesar

The paramedics had explained I had a moderately severe concussion. Unfortunately that meant I shouldn’t go to sleep for at least twelve hours. Guess that’s what happens when you get bitch slapped by a hunk of steel. I filed that away for future reference and realized I couldn’t even stand up to get my clothes off. I was dizzy and not at all interested in taking my chances on walking unassisted. After getting help from my associates, I got settled in at the second apartment across the hall. Eddie and I were both sprawled out on the couches in the living area, fighting to stay awake. Jim was keeping watch in the den just off the living room, and Champ was helping out and managing to be uncharacteristically quiet. He had just brought us two massive cups of coffee when there was a knock on the door. Jim got there first and I recognized the other voice as that of Katrina Poole.

“Agents Morelli and Shannon, I’m glad to see the two of you are okay, relatively speaking.” She sat on the chair across from me and looked over what used to be my face. “When Agent Shannon called and told me who you’d managed to catch, I thought it might be a good idea to get over here. I apologize for the delay, but I have to be cautious.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Eddie said, “It won’t do any of us any good if your cover gets blown. And by the way, call me Eddie.”

“We could certainly use your help.” I struggled to sit up and failed completely. Instead, I decided to take a gulp of coffee and light a cigarette. “Kristin’s DNA was a close enough match to another sample taken from Alyssa, which we assumed to be a sibling. Kristin confirmed that when she thought she had the drop on us. Looks like it was a brother. If you could give us information on him, we’d appreciate it. A full name, last known address, anything.”

“His full name is Samuel House. On the street he’s known as Sam ‘the Slaughter’ House, and for good reason. He’s every bit as twisted as his sister, if not more so. He has a penchant for doing things in a particularly messy fashion, usually with knives. Based on what I know about him, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he was the gentleman you encountered at Mr. Riker’s home.”

“The pleasant fellow who tried to stick a knife into me?” I recalled.

She nodded. “As you probably know, he and his sister share a—close relationship.” She leaned forward. “It is somewhat surprising he would have let his sister attempt to eliminate a problem without his help.” She tapped her long fingernail on her teeth while she pondered the situation.

“Speaking of his sister, maybe you can explain how someone who’s barely five feet tall and a hundred and ten pounds could kick the hell out of us like that,” I said.
