Chapter 9 - Player's Paradox

It has been a little over twenty days since we started waking up the Drune Rex sleepers.

During that time things have been... A little odd around here. That's about the only way I can explain it.

The first matter are the NPC's we're waking up. About 15% of them come through the waking process with extensive memory loss. Some are so bad they don't even remember their names. Thankfully all of them are in listed pods and we have enough data left to fill in the required blanks for them. Names, birthdates, information on their families, work histories and general history.

Many of those don't even remember the attack on Drune, and are utterly surprised at the state of things when they are finally allowed to see the outside. Thankfully even memory loss doesn't interfere with their calm demeanors and interest in progress. The vast majority of them jump right on the work wagon and are sent off for training and placement in the quickly expanding workforce.

The second issue are the players. Each and every one of them is the same, at least game-wise. Extreme memory loss, except they all know their names and their skillsets. The NPC's don't even bat an eye at that, thankfully, so they get to be schooled on Drune Rex history, and many of them treat the starting facility as a tutorial area.

Whatever works for them, although it is often very amusing to watch them scurry around, getting missions and the rare low-key quest from the doctors and the others set about watching them.

What really gets the players though is me. So far I've managed to meet every single player who's been brought into the Drune Rex, and they are almost always overawed. Some of them take the fact that I'm a ruler far too seriously; but overall none of them are too disconcerted about it. The bigger issue is their interest in how I treat them.

Just let me tell you, I get quite a few laughs when I tell them that I'm not interested in bossing 'em around. It is a far cry from being a Company leader or the like. Hell, I don't even go around with any sort of guards, either. The security forces are far too busy for me to yank a bunch of them for my personal protection. I don't need it.

Well, except maybe to protect me from Gabby and Karren. Those two women are relentless. And utter competitive bitches.

I knew Karren was wanting to jump into the game. That's a given, and something James had already told me. But Gabby showing up, and showing up FIRST was a big surprise.

I know for a fact that she was only supposed to be watching me, having been told so by the guy who bosses her boss. But she'd talked them into letting her do so in the game instead of as a third-person spectator. It was quite a surprise, and I was quite ready to slam the Cryo-Sleep pods door back shut when they woke her up.
