Chapter 4 - Underground Vacation

The Trident has turned into a beehive of activity. A whole lot of activity. With more than a thousand of the surviving Drune Rex having moved in, the place is filled with the sights, sounds, laughter. The yelling of others giving out orders was totally different from just about anything I'd experienced up to this point.

To put it bluntly, the place has turned into a madhouse. But that's part of the fun, right?

Everyone was now suited up and they were all busy. Unloading the goods and equipment coming up from the planet, moving stuff around, assigning compartments to different work groups and rooms for individuals. Or in some cases, shared bunking. Even though the Trident was large, there was still only a limited number of rooms for everyone.

As a military vessel, most of the sleeping arrangements were for four-person barrack rooms. Each of which are individually sealable in case of hull breach. Some had been converted for family use, for those with brats that are running around, gawking at everything.

I'd barely gotten the tug landed in my assigned bay when it is swarmed by a group waiting for me and about a dozen robots that were after the materials I'd ended up hauling up with me. Thankfully they have the ship and hold cleared out within minutes, and I'm able to get out of the tug without the tight squeeze I'd gone through when getting in.

I'd barely stepped out of the open airlock when Archy appears beside me.

He looks... Alive, somehow. Definitely more expressive now. He's watching everything with an almost a childlike glee. Or curiosity.

"A little more than half of the survivors have already come aboard, Allec. They all seem so lively."

His words are low, for my ears only, but I nod and undog my helmet, carrying it under one arm as I look around and watch as well.

"Yeah. Having more than a thousand people running around is a big change compared to the ten some odd people from our original move. How are things going here?"

I really cannot help but give a grin while talking, watching the other Rex myself. The others seem much more motivated and active than before. It is definitely a good sign.

"It is going well. Most of the materials they're bringing up are subpar, but I've shown several of the crews to the manufacturing compartments and the machine shops, so they're going to refab just about everything. The Drune Rex were always an inquisitive lot, and this bunch is even more so than most."

Heh. I really couldn't imagine how it used to be, before five hundred years of near-captivity under Drune's hellish surface. But that is alright, too.

"They've been without proper technology and facilities for a long time. I've seen the jury-rigged computers and machines they were using down at Site Prime. I'm not surprised that they'd take to the Trident like ducks to a pond."

My words bring a short laugh from Archy, and he turns to me with a... Well, it's a big ass grin.
