Chapter 20

Kristoff stood in front of me, staring at me with those gray eyes. They were the same eyes that had been staring back at me in some of my favorite memories, the same eyes that had spiked my heartrate more times than I cared to count, and the same eyes I hoped might someday house my future. Only, there was something off about them.

I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that the thing I was looking at was not the man of my dreams. It was, for all intents and purposes, a twisted echo of that man, built on the memories and fears of his brother. And, judging from the look of him, he wanted to rip my insides out and wear them as a headdress.

“You shouldn’t be here, baby,” the thing wearing Kristoff’s face said, smiling just enough so that I got a hint of fang. If he thought that was going to scare me, he was mistaken. I had fought enough real vampires that the idea of running away from a fake one seemed utterly ridiculous.

“You’re one to talk,” I answered without even a hint of hesitation in my voice. “You’re a stowaway in this man’s mind, and I’ve come to take you out. Also, if you call me baby again, I’m going to make sure the process is as painful as possible.”

For his part, the thing that looked like Kristoff didn’t seem afraid of me. Instead, it chuckled wildly. “You really are adorable when you try to be menacing,” it cooed. “I can see why he’s so crazy about you.”

“Just because you look like Kristoff doesn’t mean you know anything about him,” I answered coolly.

“That’s true,” the thing answered. “But I wasn’t talking about Kristoff.

I balked. “What are yo-”

“This body belongs to me,” the thing answered. “I was pulled from the nether regions by force of magic, and the ancient laws dictate that the vessel I was pulled into becomes mine as a source of payment for that inconvenience.” The thing shook its head. “Now, seeing as how you’re about as worn as brand new socks, I’m going to forgive you for not knowing of these laws, but that doesn’t mean I’ll forgive you disobeying them. I’ve been looking for the consciousness of this body’s old host since the moment I got here, but he’s evaded me. He’s not as naive as you, it would seem. Of course, he doesn’t have to be. Your arrival led me right to him. So, I’ll give you a choice. You can leave here right now, and I won’t hurt you. I’ll even open a door for you if you’re incapable of doing so on your own.” The thing’s gray eyes slid over to Isaac. “You have to leave Baby Brother with me, though. It’s time for him to take his medicine.”

I looked at the darkness etched across that face, a face that I loved, a face that I had only ever seen as a supportive and wonderful thing and wondered just what Isaac saw when he looked at his brother.
