Flickering torchlight broke the pitch darkness. Gideon strolled through the lios gates at a fair clip. Neill approached from the well, his countenance grim.

“What’s happened?” Gideon met his brother.

Neill waved an arm. “Taltena. She’s fled. Connor came with news from Lord Brian, and she took herself hence. He went to speak with her. Little good that did.”

Gideon shook his head. “Shall I help you find her?”

“No need. I know where she’s gone. The others await you inside. Ri Mahon’s enemies have joined the Danes, and he means to put an end to the trouble brewing for us in Mumhain.”

The news sent a surge of exhilaration through Gideon. He clapped Neill on the back and jogged to the cottage.

Ronan stood at the door. “Now you choose to show?”

Gideon laughed and gripped Ronan by the shoulder. “Well, don’t stand there huffing like a scorned lass!”

Gideon breezed inside, Ronan in his wake. Within, Father circled the hearth, his dark features lent to his brooding impatience. He stopped and slapped his thigh. “High time.”

Gideon stripped the mantle from his shoulders and hung it on a peg. Father bid him to the meal board. “Come sit. We’ve word from Cashel.”

Gideon settled across the board, striving for composure. “What news from Mahon?”

Father rapped his knuckles on the plank. “The rumors are true, my lad. Molloy of Desmond and Donovan of the Uí Cairbre have taken up with King Ivar. They intend to challenge Mahon’s kingship. Lord Ilbrecc sends word that Molloy rests easy at Raithlin, his fortress in Desmond, for he possesses sufficient hostages to claim Cashel’s kingship without setting foot there. Ri Mahon means to cut the legs from under the upstart. As we speak, he rides to meet Ilbrecc’s band. Together they’ll steal Molloy’s hostages. Brian requests you and Connor join his forces.”

“You say, Connor and I?”

Father’s smile broadened. “Brian has named you captain. He thinks you suited to the task.”

Gideon nearly shot from the bench. “Ha!” He had often wondered whether Brian would remember his promise. After four years of fighting alongside him, it finally came to pass. “When are we to leave?”

“In two days. I need time to see how many men we can afford to part with. You’ll take them to Connor to divide as he sees fit.” Father rose from his seat. “The hour of victory is at hand.” He gripped Gideon’s arm. “Ardan’s death shall not have been in vain.”
