Drew's cell phone rang as he watched Tony exit the coffee shop. He looked down and saw it was from his mother. His heart leaped into his throat.

"Mom, what's going on?"

"You need to get back to the hospital, now. Doctor says he doesn't have very long."

He let out a deep breath. "On my way."

The coffee he had imbibed had injected a bit of energy into him, but now as he tried to run, he discovered that the excess liquid was not an aid to rapid movement. He could hear the liquid sloshing around in his stomach. Despite the difficulty, he kept his legs pumping. His brother was on his death bed.

Breaths came in gasps as he entered the hospital room where he had left his mother. Tears were streaming down her face. She didn't speak but just shook her head.

"No!" Drew whispered. "Did he gain consciousness?"

"No. I never got to say goodbye to him when he was awake."

Drew remembered that he had refused to admit his brother was dying. And so he had never gotten the opportunity to say a proper farewell either.

Drew hugged his mom. "Do you want me to stay?"

"No sense in it. I'm going home in a few minutes. This has been so hard on both of us. Why don't you go home and get that sleep now? I'll be there shortly."

Drew nodded and exited the room. After he had already traversed a section of the hallway, he remembered that he had not said goodbye to his mother. He had decided that life was an uncertainty. If you didn't tell people farewell when you had the chance, you might never get the opportunity again. He retraced his steps.

"Mom."

"I thought you left?"

"Just wanted to say, in case anything happens to either one of us, goodbye."

"Thank you, Drew. Goodbye to you. And be careful. You're all I have left now."

He nodded and exited once again. As he walked back to his car, he thought of the guy at the coffee shop. He had said he'd be back tomorrow about the same time. Not only was the guy one of the enemy, he was trying to organize a gay pride day. That made him a leader and a worthy target. Drew decided he'd go back for another cup of coffee himself. But he wouldn't go alone. He had a metallic friend in his trunk.
