CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Tommy

When I get to Theo’s apartment, I sling my keys across the room and let out a huge groan. I’m so glad Theo moved in with Darla because I don’t want to deal with having to explain anything to him. I’m the biggest dork on the planet. It’s clear that I don’t have much girlfriend experience. Even though I’m supposedly a smart dude, I failed the chick test, big time.

I head into the kitchen, but since I haven’t stayed here in weeks and Theo lives on hospital food, there are no ingredients to even make toast. Trying to figure out another way to calm down besides bake, I pace through the living room then pull out my phone to dial my professor. I need to give her an answer.

“I was beginning to assume you were ignoring me,” Professor Alexander says.

“I’ve been thinking.”

“And?”

I stare at the ceiling, not believing what I’m about to say. “I, uh, I’m coming back to Boston. Might as well, right?” These last few days have been so stressful, even Boston is sounding pretty good.

“Oh, Tom, that’s wonderful. I’ve got some great ideas to share with you about the next steps on your project. Just tell me when you’ll be here, and I’ll have your lab space ready.”

After a deep sigh and a quick kick to my own ass, I say, “Give me a few weeks to find a place to live.”

“Sounds good. See you soon.”

I hang up the phone, and it immediately rings. Assuming it’s Alexander again, I answer without checking the caller ID.

“I just happened to be getting a free meal with the folks and overheard you talking to Mom. So, you’re coming back. Can’t wait to see you.”

Son of a...

“No, Hazel. I said no.”

“Stop calling me that hideous name.”

Thus the basis for me using it.

She huffs into the phone. “We need to catch up.”

I slump down on the couch. “No. I’m coming back to school. That’s all. It’s over between us, and I’m engaged, remember?”

“You’re engaged?” Her high-pitched shrill sends shock waves through my eardrum.

“I’m pretty sure I told you, but since you don’t listen to anyone other than yourself, I assume my words fell on deaf ears.”

“And you can survive a long-distance relationship?”

Nope. “Of course.”

“Sure...”

I run a hand through my hair. “Listen, Hazel. There is no ‘us.’ That was over before it started. If I come back, I’m a student only. Got it?”

“No. I do not get it.”

“Back off, or I will tell your mother.” I should have done that when it all started, but Professor Alexander has a “no drugs, no drama, no daughter” policy. At least I didn’t do drugs. Hazel tried to get me to, but it was one of the many reasons I needed to get away from her.

I don’t like school, but if I’m going to be there, I certainly need to have my major professor on my side. She could make or break my entire career. If Professor Alexander refuses to sign off on my work, all my time there would be for nothing.
