HENDERSON: BOOZING COST YANKEES THE PENNANT

When Rickey Henderson arrived to spring training two days later than everyone else, his teammates didn’t think much of it. “Rickey’s just being Rickey” was the general response.

A couple days later, however, Henderson drew a far different response from the other Yankee players when he claimed that his teammates’ excessive drinking had cost the Yankees the pennant in 1988.

“I saw too many people getting drunk,” Henderson said. “How can you perform the next day? Liquor doesn’t leave you overnight. You have to know when to party and when not to party.”
