$$$$ Ristorante Tar-Tufo, on the back side of Il Campo, is the only place in the old center offering a gourmet meal on a countryside view terrace. Tucked in the basement of a former school, the restaurant specializes in modern Tuscan cuisine garnished with truffles (daily 12:00-14:30 & 16:30-22:00, Via del Sole 6, tel. 0577-284-031).

$$$ Compagnia dei Vinattieri is a good bet for wine lovers and serves Tuscan dishes with a creative touch. In this elegant space, you can enjoy a romantic meal under graceful brick arches. The menu is small and accessible. Owners Marco and Gianfranco are happy to take you down to the marvelous wine cellar (beef is big here, leave this book on the table for a complimentary aperitivo or digestivo, daily 12:30-15:00 & 19:30-23:00, enter at Via dei Pittori 1 or Via delle Terme 79, tel. 0577-236-568).

$$ Osteria Il Carroccio, artsy and convivial, seats guests in a characteristic but tight dining room. They serve traditional “slow food” recipes with innovative flair at affordable prices (€30 tasting menu—minimum two people, reservations wise, Thu-Tue 12:30-15:00 & 19:30-22:00, closed Wed, Casato di Sotto 32, tel. 0577-41165).
