How all the principals came together is a story in itself.

Dines, who made his fortune as an oilman, popped up in Hollywood in 1923, eager to try his hand as a movie producer. He was little known around town but “lived like a man of large means and [a] free spender.” Almost immediately he fell in with Mabel and Edna. Though these were the dark days of Prohibition, all three were fond of booze. They got along famously, said Mabel. “We were just three friends, palling around.” On one of their excursions, the trio sailed to Catalina Island off the coast of California, a trip that produced some raucous photographs found in Dines’s apartment after the shooting.

This wasn’t the first (or last) time that alcohol got the handsome polo player/golfer in hot water. In 1918, he and a friend, Major H. S. Keown of the Canadian-British Recruiting Headquarters, launched a brawl in a Casper, Wyoming, hotel bar after, said a news report, “they imbibed rather freely of various herculean waters and vintages.” Some local cowboys made fun of the major’s uniform: “Pretty uniform the boy has, eh, wot?” Keown responded, “You’re a fine bunch of slackers! Why don’t you put on a uniform?” Dines and Keown were pummeled in the ensuing battle.
