Chapter 24

A few minutes after my conversation with Lyndy, Marshall phoned. Short and to the point. “Hey, hon, just wanted to let you know I’m heading over to the hospital with Bowman. Can you believe it? He actually insisted I join him. Said Ranston told him that he tended to intimidate people. Wanted me along for the ride.”

I laughed. “What are Nate and Ranston doing?”

“Checking out the scene and talking with witnesses. I’ll be home as soon as I can. Get some rest. Or at least make a stab at it.”

“Not the best choice of words.”

“She was asphyxiated. No blood involved.”

“For now. All of this is so bizarre.”

“Take a breath. It won’t be for long.”

I hoped he was right but I didn’t give it too much credence. Marshall and Nate were the proverbial optimists while I went to the dark side first and worked my way backward from there.

It was almost midnight when Marshall crept into bed. Half awake, I asked him how it went and he told me they were keeping Aimee overnight for observation. She was able to breathe on her own but still somewhat disoriented and dizzy. The oxygen was helping. No permanent damage.

“That’s a relief. Does she remember anything of significance?”

“Not really. Said the paint booth was empty when she arrived, so she hooked up her paint supply, drove the car in, made sure everything was closed and began the process. That was the last thing she recalled before being shaken by someone.”

“What someone?”

“She doesn’t remember, but according to the deputies, it was the monitor on duty—Mike Odell.”

“Does she have any idea who could have sabotaged the booth?”

“Nope. Maybe later when her head clears. Ranston said the monitor was absolutely shocked. Still, perpetrators can be pretty good actors.”

“I know.”

I closed my eyes and before I knew it, it was morning. Marshall was already in the shower so I made us coffee and toast, which we chomped down before he rushed off to see Aimee.

As I let the warm water wash over me, I couldn’t help but wonder why on earth someone would want to harm her. Unless they thought she was the one responsible for killing Betsy. Then again, it didn’t appear as if anyone was that attached to Betsy in order to seek revenge.

When I arrived at the office, I shared my thoughts with Augusta, who had already gotten the news from Nate.

“Sounds like that auto restoration garage needs an Enter at your own risk sign,” she said. “Anyway, Mr. Williams got a fax from the forensics lab about that miniature doll with the creepy note. It sent him racing out the door.”

“They found fingerprints? A match?”

Augusta shook her head. “I read the fax and they found smears of paint on the doll. They analyzed it and it was some sort of metallic paint. Mr. Williams thought maybe the burnished coloring was blood or nail polish but he couldn’t tell. Anyway, it was good old-fashioned metal paint.”

“Like Rust-Oleum?”

“I suppose. Not house paint or that sort of thing.
