As promised, Posy came by the bar on Sunday.

“So I do know someone,” she said in a low voice. I slid a glass of whiskey in front of her.

“On the house.”

“You’re too sweet.”

“Me? Sweet?” I raised an eyebrow.

Posy snorted. “No, you’re right. Your soul is as dark and bitter as coffee.”

“Gee, thanks.” I rolled my eyes. “Now, spill.”

Posy glanced around warily, but at the moment there was no one near us. She’d seated herself beneath the window. The bar was filled with muted chatter and the tinkle of the radio, and only Anna and I were working this evening.

Nothing to worry about.

“My old roommate’s sister,” Posy explained. “Her name is Lettie. I checked and she still works there, but if you want to contact her, you’ll have to do it without me. She hates me.”

Brilliant. I’d have to ingratiate myself. My speciality. “Dare I ask why?”

“Relationship drama,” Posy said airily, waving a hand. “Don’t worry about it. It’ll be fine so long as you don’t mention my name.”

“Alright, so how am I supposed to find her?”

“Here.” Posy slid a scrap of paper onto the table. “Her address. But if she asks…”

“You didn’t give it to me. Got it.” I slipped the paper into my jeans. “Don’t worry, I won’t involve you.”

This was my mess to sort out. I wasn’t dragging anyone else into it.

“Alright.” Posy stretched out her legs and leant back in her chair. “Now scram. I want to actually enjoy my free drink.”

“Love you too.”

“Always, babes.” She toasted me. Rolling my eyes, I retreated to the bar to pick up an order for table seven.

Posy lingered for a while, buying herself a second drink. I found her presence in the bar comforting. When I went by her table to refill her water, I commented, “You should come here more often.”

“I would if I lived on this side of town.” Posy glanced around. “It’s a nice gig. I wouldn’t pick the bunker over this.”

“You should come work here. We’re short-staffed anyway.”

“Gianna would like that. She doesn’t like the boys groping me at the bunker.”

“Gianna’s got the right of it.” I picked up my tray again. “Bring her around here sometime. I want to meet her.”

“Ooh, look who’s getting bossy.”

I snorted. “You’d think after all these years of knowing me, you’d want to introduce me to your partner.”

Posy tilted her head, pretending to consider it. “I’ll think about it.”

“Mean.”

She laughed. “Maybe you’ll get lucky at the bunker next weekend.”

“I’ll be sure to remind you.” We exchanged grins before I caught sight of table three waving. I sighed. “Duty calls.”

“Off you go, babes.”

There was still no sign of the merchants’ caravan by the end of the day. The tension was approaching a breaking point: the market was supposed to begin tomorrow, and it was rapidly becoming obvious that the merchants wouldn’t be here in time. At some point, someone was going to have to step up and take control of the situation—the mayor? If he didn’t, who would? I couldn’t remember a time when the merchants had been delayed by more than a day or so.
