ATTEMPTING AN INTERPRETATION

MANY WRITERS OF THE HUNDREDS OF BOOKS PUBLISHED SINCE the Mexican-American War fail to mention the unpleasantness at Taos and its aftermath. Of those who do, few make much effort to posit definitive reasons for its origin, or to attempt to identify those responsible for its occurrence, or to tackle its more complex issues, or to delve into its consequences. Content to gloss over the entire episode in two or three pages, covering the battles and recounting those people killed and wounded, they quickly move on to other aspects of the war. Since the revolt occurred far from the major conflicts in Mexico, it is often considered to have been but a mere blip on the radar screen and one that lacks merit for serious discussion.

However, the Taos affair did generate several issues that require edification and explanation. A few writers have provided a degree of insight into the revolt, and some of their findings lend credence to certain conclusions and theories. This information is explored and synthesized here in an effort to arrive at plausible answers to several quandaries that have never been fully explained, for instance: the reasons for the Taos Revolt occurring in the first place, Padre Antonio José Martínez’s role in the incident, and the Polk administration’s monumental error in prematurely declaring territorial status for New Mexico.
