“Whoo-eee!” Doc yelped. “Everybody’s animated!”

Louie realized that they had reached their destination after all. He grinned at Zabana and Doc. For some reason, O’Clanrahan looked even more upset than he had before. Was the Change getting to be too much for the elderly police officer? At the rate things were moving now, Louie guessed he could really empathize with the cop’s confusion. But, as far as he was concerned, that confusion ended here.

“Okay, guys!” he yelled to the non-bunnies as they all ran out under the cartoon sun. “Enough’s enough! Let’s stop running already!”

“But we like to run!” cheered a gray and white bunny that Louie recognized—was his name Fluffytail? “And hop and jump and skip and romp and cavort—”

“Running can be nice,” Louie interrupted after he had taken a second to catch his breath. “But we have a job to do!”

“Job?” a much deeper voice asked as a much larger (approximately six-foot-high) rabbit bounded forward. Louie remembered this one, too.

“Bouncer!” the very large rabbit introduced himself anyway. “Bouncer likes jobs. Bouncer can harvest carrots. Bouncer can gather lettuce.”

“Well,” Louie replied, “this is a rather special job.”

“Bouncer can pick broccoli!” the large rabbit insisted.

“Broccoli?” the Prince of the Jungle perked up.”Zabana like broccoli!”

“Bunnies like all sorts of vegetables!” Fluffytail explained. “Carrots and lettuce and broccoli and cauliflower and brussel sprouts and Hubbard squash and water chest-nuts—”

Big Louie couldn’t allow himself to be distracted.

“This has nothing to do with vegetables,” he interrupted again, trying to keep the exasperation out of his voice. “But it really is a job that only bunnies can do.”

“Bunnies are Zabana’s friends!” the jungle prince added helpfully.

“It is only with your help,” Louie continued, “that we can hope to defeat”—he paused appropriately— “Doctor Dread.”

“Doctor Dread?” asked another one of the bunnies, whose name might have been Spottynose or Bentear or something like that. “Who’s Doctor Dread?”

“Bouncer likes Zabana, too!” The very large rabbit extended a welcoming paw, which

the jungle prince regarded with great interest.

Who’s Doctor Dread? Now Louie was confused. The last time they had been in these parts, the bunnies had spent all their time tormenting the snakeskin-suited villain with cream pies and exploding carrots. How could the bunnies not know Doctor Dread when they had spent so long fighting him?

But Fluffytail thumped his right rear paw in comprehension. “You mean Malevelo!”

Of course! How could Louie have forgotten? When Doctor Dread was on the Bunnyland world, he didn’t wear snakeskin, he wore wizard’s robes! This animated world was, after all, the place where Doctor Dread fit in all too well, and, instead of controlling the forces in the Cineverse, he found himself being controlled. Just as Captain Crusader had been transformed into the beach bunny Dee Dee Davenport on the surfing world, so was Doctor Dread totally changed on this bunny planet, becoming the easily angered but thoroughly ineffectual wizard Malevelo!

“Yes,” Big Louie agreed. “Malevelo.”

All the bunnies booed and hissed.

The jungle prince broke his pensive silence. “Broccoli is Zabana’s friend, too.”

“Broccoli is nice and green,” Bouncer agreed with an eager nod.
