THE BEST WE CAN DO

Adam and Eve turned to Scraps with looks of incredulity, as if the robot had just uttered the most preposterous lie ever spoken by man or machine. Scraps, on the other hand, remained jolly and upbeat, and also suddenly devoid of fear or anxiety. Knowing that the prefects were genetically related to Finn and Elara was all the confirmation the robot needed to trust them.

“That can’t be true, these people are barely a few years older than we are,” Adam, the Prefect Alpha, said. “We couldn’t possibly be their children. It makes no sense.”

“Scraps took blood sample!” the robot said, springing a probe from one of the many compartments in his oil-can body. “Blood on floor after fight. Scraps tests it!”

Adam touched a hand to a cut on his neck, which the man had sustained during the fight with Finn and Elara. Blood was still weeping from the injury and Adam rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger, before looking back at the probe that Scraps was still gleefully waving around, like a flag.

“No offense, my little robot friend, but you will need to prove that,” Adam finally replied.

“Chiefy can show!” Scraps said, pointing to the bigger robot. “Just need ‘puter access!”

Adam sighed then looked at Eve, the Prefect Omega, and his counterpart. The woman simply shrugged, as if to say, “why not?”. It was exactly the sort of reaction that Elara would have given in response to the same unspoken question.

“Okay, but we’ll have to limit your access,” Adam said.

The man gestured to the other prefects, and they all lowered their weapons and removed their helmets. Besides subtle variations in the way the men and women had cut and styled their hair, they were identical clones of one another. Adam then led them to a computer terminal and sat down at the controls, unlocking the terminal then working the system for several seconds to create a restricted account for Chiefy to use.

“You might want to get that cut tended to,” Finn said, noticing that the wound on Adam’s neck was still weeping. Elara smiled at him, perhaps because of the paternal concern he was suddenly demonstrating for his genetic offspring.

“We can have foremen bring in a few med kits, and some water too,” Adam said, nodding toward one of the other prefects, who jumped to the task. “And some food, if you’re hungry?”

“I could eat something,” Elara replied. “I honestly don’t know how long it’s been since we ate or drank anything, or slept for that matter.”

Another officer, an Adam, peeled away from the group and entered a room in the prefect hub, which was perhaps a canteen or communal space. By the time that both officers had returned, one with medical supplies and the other with flasks and food blocks wrapped in silver foil that didn’t look dissimilar to the algae protein bars that Metalhaven workers survived on during a shift, the modifications to the computer were complete.

“There, you can use this terminal now,” Adam said, sliding out of the seat and allowing Chiefy to take his place.
