Chapter 15

It was a casual dinner date. At least, that’s what Declan had said. Nothing heavy, just a chance to get to know one another a bit better. In a relaxed setting. With a bite of something to eat. Except that for Clara it might as well have been a meal out in the poshest restaurant imaginable.

Declan had left Joy’s Acre soon after their meeting and so for much of the day it had been business as usual. Autumn was just as busy a time for her in the garden as the summer and there were plenty of jobs that needed doing: crops to harvest; others to be planted to allow them time to settle in before winter; large areas to be cleared and put to bed. Clara had also helped Trixie to prepare lunch and dinner for everyone as usual and so the day had passed quickly, albeit with a slightly more exuberant atmosphere than usual. However, now it was early evening and she was back at home, tying herself in knots trying to get ready.

She couldn’t remember the last time she had been on a date, something which very much belonged to her old life; the one she’d had before she became ill. It was strange the way her life had become categorised into two halves but, in a way, she supposed it was inevitable. She’d been young, free and single before her illness, with a happy go lucky attitude to life, but nothing made you re-evaluate the things you cared about more than the threat of having them taken away from you. Things had got pretty intense between her and Seth during her recovery, but it quickly became clear they were just good friends, and so any thoughts of love had been pushed to the back of her mind and she had resolved to keep them there until she was fully recovered. Despite her misgivings about things changing so fast at Joy’s Acre, she couldn’t deny that Declan had caught her eye and perhaps this in itself was enough of a sign that the time had come to allow this area of her life to blossom once more. But she’d be lying if she said it didn’t terrify her.

Clara knew it wouldn’t do to turn herself into a painted and primped version of herself – Declan would see through that in a moment – but she did want to look as if she had at least made an effort. Her wardrobe choices were fairly limited but, by the time she had laid out nearly every single item of clothing she possessed, it certainly didn’t look that way. She’d thought scenes like this only happened in films, but now, faced with the reality of finding something to wear, she found herself laughing at the irony.

In the end, she settled for a white linen smock patterned with small yellow flowers and green leaves. It was her all over, but slightly smarter than what she would usually wear. Paired with a pair of her favourite jeans, clean this time rather than covered in mud, she felt comfortable.
