CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Cooking is one of the greatest gifts you can give those you love.—Ina Garten

Gray was just closing the oven door when he heard his doorbell ring. He was trying his hand at cooking. Tonight, he was making honey garlic chicken. Last night he had made salmon. It was a little dry, but overall, the meal was decent for someone who could barely boil water a few years ago.

Being with Lily and Cyrus every day was good for Gray. When he was captured, he hadn’t eaten regularly. Maybe it was once a day. It was never at a regular time. It was always just enough to keep them from being malnourished. His body had been knocked off track for so long that he’d continued not to eat regularly long after food was readily available, but now that he had Lily and her grandfather with him for most of the day, he had to make sure they were fed, and when they ate, he did as well.

He was starting to feel better. His mind was more alert. His body no longer felt as if he were dragging it through mud.

He walked over to his front door and opened it, expecting to see Romey’s father or even his. No one else came by the house unless it was a delivery person or a contractor, and it was too late in the evening for that.

“Gwen.” He froze for a moment, shocked to see her there. “Would you like to come in?”

“No.” Her face didn’t hold the pleasant neutral expression it had the last time he had seen her. He didn’t recall ever seeing her angry in the little over a year they had been together. They had never had one fight, not even a small disagreement. He’d thought she would be the perfect woman to marry because of that, before he realized that perfection didn’t exist in anyone and that he didn’t know her at all. “I heard you were the father of Romey Michaels’ daughter.”

“Yes.” He nodded. “Lily is mine.”

“Did you cheat on me, Gray?”

He shook his head, not sure he was hearing her correctly. “I never cheated on you.”

“I did the math, Gray. She had to have been conceived very close to the time you broke our engagement. Is that why you did it? You felt guilty about sleeping with Romey?”

“I never slept with Romey when I was with you,” he said firmly. “I do not cheat. There is no reason for me to lie.”

“But you left me for her, didn’t you?”

He opened his mouth to speak, but he couldn’t find the right words to say. He was going to sound like an asshole either way. He refused to lie to her. “It wasn’t fair of me to marry you when I wasn’t sure. I didn’t have some grand plan to leave you for her. I didn’t even know how she felt. We were barely speaking at that time.”

“You two had a thing before we got together, didn’t you? It makes perfect sense now.
