“Meet me by the moonlight, oh meet me

Meet me by the moonlight alone,

I have a sad story to tell you

All down by the moonlight alone”

The backlighting dimmed down and all four spotlights were trained on her. The sound engineer added a slight bit of reverb to her voice, which gave it a distant quality. Her voice was steady, but quiet and sincere. It had a professional quality to it and in the range of an alto. She looked straight ahead to the back of the Common, looking over the crowd but her thoughts were back in the woods with the Indians.

“If I had the wings of an angel

Over these prison walls I would fly

And I'd fly to the arms of my darlin'

And there I'd be willing to die”

In her mind’s eye, Lorraine saw the tribe turning to stare at her as she started singing. They were completely silent and fully attentive, but surprised. She folded her hands in front of her and stared at the moon back in time. It was the same moon that rose over her right shoulder in back of the stage, in full view of the audience. She folded her hands on the stage remembering the moment.

“Meet me by the moonlight, oh meet me

Meet me by the moonlight alone,

I have a sad story to tell you

All down by the moonlight alone”

The audience on the Common was hushed, still and overwhelmed. She had managed to put her accessibility aside and create the “fourth wall” between her and the audience. In their eyes, it elevated her. She was untouchable, alone in a very beautiful way. She was sharing a private moment that was hundreds of years old, in a clear and unwavering voice.

“If I had a ship on the ocean

All mounted with silver and gold

Before my little darlin’ would suffer

I’d have that ship anchored and sold”

“Meet me by the moonlight, oh meet me

Meet me by the moonlight alone,

I have a sad story to tell you

All down by the moonlight alone”
