In the command assault craft Colonel Smallwood watched the bank of monitors relaying images from helmet cameras and electronic read-outs from individual troopers. The assault force of five hundred had already garnered 85 casualties. The number rose by three as he watched.

“Things best get better quick or we’re fucked,” he muttered.

The holo of Fremont showed that two squads had reached Objective Bay One and three other squads were holding a rough perimeter around the entry points.

The two squads from Bay One were retracing their route.

They either had the captives or found none alive. It burned at him that he had to witness everything secondhand rather than be in the thick of the fight. He peered at the displays and tried to parse the images.
