‘See? Didn’t I tell you he wasn’t bad for a posh bloke?’ Nancy nodded at Daisy across the café table on Friday morning and pushed an oat and raisin cookie towards her. ‘He gave my cake Best in Show and anyone with taste that good can’t be completely terrible.’

It wasn’t an argument Daisy felt would stand up in a court of law but she had to concede Nancy had been right about Kit. ‘I didn’t realize he’s a single parent.’

Her friend nodded. ‘But from the sounds of things, he’s better off that way. I don’t know the full story but I think Alice’s mum walked out when she was less than a year old. Left Kit holding the baby while trying to get his flying career off the ground after leaving the RAF.’

Daisy frowned. ‘Lots of women struggle to cope with a newborn baby,’ she said doubtfully, thinking back to how hard it had been when the twins were tiny. ‘I don’t think we should judge her without knowing the full story.’

‘That’s true,’ Nancy allowed, breaking off a piece of cookie and crunching on it thoughtfully. ‘But rumour has it she went straight to the airport, flew to Val-d’Isère for the ski season and never came back.’

Daisy pursed her lips. If that was true then it was harder to understand but plenty of absent fathers had done similar things. Was it any different because it was a mother they were discussing? Perhaps not but it had to have been hard on Kit and Alice. Not that it was any of Daisy’s business, she reminded herself. ‘Alice seems like a decent kid, in spite of everything,’ she said. ‘Finn and Campbell like her and I do too.’

Nancy fired a sly look across the table. ‘Speaking of people you like, I hear you and Drew had a cosy little smooch on Monday evening.’

Immediately, Daisy felt her cheeks turn rosy red. ‘What? No, we didn’t. Who told you that?’

‘Calm down,’ Nancy said, grinning. ‘I’m not your mum. I think it’s nice that you’re making new friends.’

Daisy fanned her face, willing the blush to subside. ‘But we didn’t – we weren’t kissing or anything. It was just a dance, that’s all.’

‘A slow dance,’ Nancy teased. ‘When there wasn’t even any music playing.’

Mortified, Daisy took refuge in her cup of tea. Had everyone seen her and Drew dancing? Was the whole village discussing it? ‘There really wasn’t anything in it.’

Nancy sat back. ‘That’s not what Drew told me. He seems to think sparks flew and I don’t mean from the bonfire. He’s keen.’

The trouble was, Daisy couldn’t really argue – there had been a moment that felt as though it was just the two of them in the shadows beyond the leaping flames. And that was why she’d gone out of her way to avoid Drew ever since, dodging out of sight when she saw him heading to the orchard behind the farmhouse and finding something to busy herself with if she’d spotted him in the cobbled yard.
