Chapter Four

Nausea washed over Daisy as she drew in a shallow panic-stricken breath and spun round in her seat to check the boys were okay. Both were staring at her with wide eyes, shocked but apparently unhurt. Relief sent the breath whooshing back out of her lungs as she realized they were fine. It seemed the collision hadn’t been heavy enough to cause bumps or bruises but the flood of adrenaline currently sending her heart rate soaring was another thing entirely.

‘Did you just hit someone?’ Finn asked, his tone a mixture of reproachfulness and glee.

Daisy glanced in her rear-view mirror, ears roaring, unable to take in what had just happened. ‘I think someone just hit me, actually.’ Forcing herself to take several long breaths in and out, she reached for the door handle. ‘Stay here.’

Her legs were unsteady as she got out and looked at the back of the car. A gleaming red Audi was now apparently attached to her bumper and its driver was also getting out. ‘Brilliant,’ he growled, scowling at Daisy. ‘Didn’t you think to look?’

Daisy flicked her gaze back to the spot where the two cars met, hoping she might see something different. ‘I did. The road was clear, I’m sure it was.’

‘Obviously it wasn’t,’ the man retorted. ‘If it had been, you wouldn’t have hit my car.’

His tone made Daisy’s hackles rise. She placed a steadying hand on the cool undamaged paintwork of the rear passenger door and met the accusation head on. ‘Or you hit mine.’

They glared at each other. Daisy was aware of a small crowd of onlookers gathering on the pavement, as well as the faces of Campbell and Finn, almost side by side as they stared out at her. Other cars had begun to queue along the high street behind the obstructing Audi. Forcing her fists to unclench, Daisy took another slow breath in and out. ‘Look, why don’t we let the insurance company decide whose fault it is? I don’t imagine the damage is catastrophic so let’s swap details, take some photos and stop blocking the road.’

For a moment he continued to glower at her as though he intended to argue further. Then, with an abrupt nod, he seemed to relent. ‘Wait here,’ he commanded. ‘I’ll pull into another space and walk back.’

His autocratic tone grated on Daisy’s already frayed nerves. ‘Hold on, I need to take a photograph before you move your car.’ Pulling out her phone, she proceeded to capture the position of both vehicles from several different viewpoints, plus close up shots of the impact.

‘If you’ve quite finished, David Bailey,’ the man said dryly. Daisy checked the pictures had saved and nodded. ‘Good. Don’t go anywhere.’

The unspoken insinuation that she might drive off rankled but Daisy bit back her sarcastic reply. He climbed back into the Audi and slowly pulled backwards. There was a brief tortured squeal as the two vehicles separated once more, followed by the gentle tinkle of broken glass and Daisy saw the Audi had come off worse.
