Whether Victor Cross was guilty or innocent wasnât a question Arabella was ready to answer just yet. She didnât know. The only thing she was sure about was that she desperately wanted him to be innocent. Maybe every other sane person in the world wouldâve reported him to authorities at this point. Sheer logic told her to play it safe and do exactly that. Lawson would certainly think more of her if she did. He might even come back to work for her.
However, her heart was telling her something entirely different. It was telling her to give the man in her arms another chance to prove himself to her.
She reveled in the way he was holding her â like she was important to him, supremely precious to him.
His kiss had a desperate edge to it, too. Gentle yet worshipful. Hopeful yet agonized. He finally broke it off and tipped his forehead against hers with a muffled groan. âI had no right to do that.â
âSays who?â she whispered against his lips. âIâm not exactly running from your kisses.â
âYou deserve so much better than me, Arabella.â
âThatâs your opinion. Do you want to hear mine?â She wrapped her arms around his neck, close to bursting into happy tears. When he didnât answer, she choked, âI think youâre the best thing thatâs ever happened to me, Vic.â
âMaybe you should have your head examined,â he rasped.
âOr maybe you should stop fighting whatâs happening between us.â She pressed a series of soft kisses to the edge of his mouth. âJust accept the fact that you make me happy.â
âI donât have much to offer you, sweetheart.â He cupped her cheek, tracing her jawline with his thumb.
âI donât want money. I just want you,â she assured softly.
He gave a grunt of surprise. âI wasnât talking about money. I have plenty of that.â
âYou do?â Swimming in incredulity, she pulled back a few inches to scan his features.
âYeah. Not sure why you look so surprised. I did more than run a gang in my past life. I did a lot of legal stuff, too.â
She shook her head, trying to grasp what he was saying. âI donât understand. Youâve been working yourself into the ground. Why would you do that if you donât even need the money?â
âBecause hard work is what you need from me right now. Itâs what Weston Ranch needs.â
The breath seeped out of her. âYou did all of that for me?â
âI certainly didnât do it for Lawson.â His voice turned teasing.
She didnât feel like laughing. Dread surged through her mid-section. âSo you never really needed this job.â
âI wouldnât say that. Coming here was never about the money. It was about taking the second chance you were offering me.â
She made a face at him. âIâm more worried about the fact that you never really needed me.â
âI think you know thatâs not true, either.â
She sighed, fisting her hands in his shirt. âThen why have you been avoiding me since our last kiss?â
âBecause I thought it was better that way. Better for you,â he amended.
