Whether Victor Cross was guilty or innocent wasn’t a question Arabella was ready to answer just yet. She didn’t know. The only thing she was sure about was that she desperately wanted him to be innocent. Maybe every other sane person in the world would’ve reported him to authorities at this point. Sheer logic told her to play it safe and do exactly that. Lawson would certainly think more of her if she did. He might even come back to work for her.

However, her heart was telling her something entirely different. It was telling her to give the man in her arms another chance to prove himself to her.

She reveled in the way he was holding her — like she was important to him, supremely precious to him.

His kiss had a desperate edge to it, too. Gentle yet worshipful. Hopeful yet agonized. He finally broke it off and tipped his forehead against hers with a muffled groan. “I had no right to do that.”

“Says who?” she whispered against his lips. “I’m not exactly running from your kisses.”

“You deserve so much better than me, Arabella.”

“That’s your opinion. Do you want to hear mine?” She wrapped her arms around his neck, close to bursting into happy tears. When he didn’t answer, she choked, “I think you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Vic.”

“Maybe you should have your head examined,” he rasped.

“Or maybe you should stop fighting what’s happening between us.” She pressed a series of soft kisses to the edge of his mouth. “Just accept the fact that you make me happy.”

“I don’t have much to offer you, sweetheart.” He cupped her cheek, tracing her jawline with his thumb.

“I don’t want money. I just want you,” she assured softly.

He gave a grunt of surprise. “I wasn’t talking about money. I have plenty of that.”

“You do?” Swimming in incredulity, she pulled back a few inches to scan his features.

“Yeah. Not sure why you look so surprised. I did more than run a gang in my past life. I did a lot of legal stuff, too.”

She shook her head, trying to grasp what he was saying. “I don’t understand. You’ve been working yourself into the ground. Why would you do that if you don’t even need the money?”

“Because hard work is what you need from me right now. It’s what Weston Ranch needs.”

The breath seeped out of her. “You did all of that for me?”

“I certainly didn’t do it for Lawson.” His voice turned teasing.

She didn’t feel like laughing. Dread surged through her mid-section. “So you never really needed this job.”

“I wouldn’t say that. Coming here was never about the money. It was about taking the second chance you were offering me.”

She made a face at him. “I’m more worried about the fact that you never really needed me.”

“I think you know that’s not true, either.”

She sighed, fisting her hands in his shirt. “Then why have you been avoiding me since our last kiss?”

“Because I thought it was better that way. Better for you,” he amended.
