CHAPTER SIXTEEN

GABE

This would totally go according to plan. It had to. Otherwise, I was probably a dead man and my entire home would be destroyed.

I took some deep, calming breaths and tried to think of it all rationally. My mother would listen to me. I would save everyone. I would be regarded as a hero.

Okay, probably not that last bit, but maybe they would grow to accept me. It wasn’t my drive though or at least not my main drive. Everyone wanted a place to belong, and perhaps after all this was over, I finally would have a place I could feel at home.

Cor followed me, keeping an eye out for any guards who were looking for us. I wanted to say it felt strange being on the lookout for someone wanting to hurt me in my own home, but it actually felt more natural than anything. Byron liked to make people hate me—it was his favorite pastime. So I constantly had people bullying me and locking me in some closet for a few hours or so overnight.

“So I take it she’s the heir to all this.”

“Bingo. No way the likes of me would ever become ruler. I don’t want it anyway. Can you imagine me ruling all the Sirians?”

He chuckled. “Not really.”

I stuck my tongue out at him. “You were supposed to say that I could do anything I could set my mind to.”

“Yeah, but you just said that you didn’t want to be the ruler. You wouldn’t want to be stuck to one place, would you? You seem like you would want to travel the world and see what it’s all about. Being stuck down here doesn’t suit you. Maybe a diplomat to different zones but not a king.”

He had a point there, but was it that I wanted to travel, or was it the fact that I was trying to find somewhere that I could call home? Those thoughts ate at me as we made it to the kitchen.

I entered to find that my mother had already left. There were about a dozen chefs all scrambling around the
