CHAPTER SIXTEEN
GABE
This would totally go according to plan. It had to. Otherwise, I was probably a dead man and my entire home would be destroyed.
I took some deep, calming breaths and tried to think of it all rationally. My mother would listen to me. I would save everyone. I would be regarded as a hero.
Okay, probably not that last bit, but maybe they would grow to accept me. It wasnât my drive though or at least not my main drive. Everyone wanted a place to belong, and perhaps after all this was over, I finally would have a place I could feel at home.
Cor followed me, keeping an eye out for any guards who were looking for us. I wanted to say it felt strange being on the lookout for someone wanting to hurt me in my own home, but it actually felt more natural than anything. Byron liked to make people hate meâit was his favorite pastime. So I constantly had people bullying me and locking me in some closet for a few hours or so overnight.
At least this time I knew there was someone out there who wanted to help me.
But now I was older and wiser and knew I had some self-worth. Now I knew that I could try to protect myself and my friends by talking face-to-face with my mother and making her see the truth. âSo I take it sheâs the heir to all this.â
âBingo. No way the likes of me would ever become ruler. I donât want it anyway. Can you imagine me ruling all the Sirians?â
He chuckled. âNot really.â
I stuck my tongue out at him. âYou were supposed to say that I could do anything I could set my mind to.â
âYeah, but you just said that you didnât want to be the ruler. You wouldnât want to be stuck to one place, would you? You seem like you would want to travel the world and see what itâs all about. Being stuck down here doesnât suit you. Maybe a diplomat to different zones but not a king.â
He had a point there, but was it that I wanted to travel, or was it the fact that I was trying to find somewhere that I could call home? Those thoughts ate at me as we made it to the kitchen.
I entered to find that my mother had already left. There were about a dozen chefs all scrambling around the
