Jordan stood at the head of the dining table, like a priest gathering his flock, where he had requested everyone to join him. He knew this would not be an easy sell and felt a little stupid rationalizing it. At nearly midnight, everyone’s patience was drawing a little thin.

“Thanks for joining me,” Jordan announced, and Vicky rolled her eyes in disgust.

“Jesus, Dad, it’s not like this is fucking Thanksgiving or anything!” she spit out.

“Vicky!” Celia scolded.

“It’s all right,” Jordan insisted. “I think I might have a solution for our problem, but I’m not sure how to explain this to you without sounding like a quack. I have, in my possession, a craft that might help us save Kelsey.”

Everyone perked up at this information.

“A ‘craft’?” Celia asked, “Did you buy a plane you haven’t told me about?”

The family smirked at this, even Jordan. “No,” he admitted, “it’s something I found many years ago.” They all looked at each other, and Jordan knew he had their attention, even if it was skeptical.

“Go on, Dad,” Lane coaxed.

“Celia, remember my last trip to Mexico?”

“Of course. How could I forget? The night you got back, we got engaged.” Celia blushed, and the girls smiled at her. Just as quickly, her expression changed, and she frowned at Jordan. “Wasn’t that the trip when the tsunami hit?’ she asked.

“Yes,” Jordan answered, knowing he was about to open up a can of worms. “I was caught in it,” he continued, looking straight at Celia. The lie was out. “It threw me into a cliff, and to make a long story short, I eventually found myself in a subterranean cavern near death. The craft and I sort of discovered each other.”

Celia was staring wide-eyed but not saying anything. Everyone could sense the tension.

“You were in a tsunami, Dad?” Vicky blurted out in surprise.

“‘Craft’?” Alex questioned. “There’s that word again. Are we talking spaceship or what?”

“Yes,” Jordan confirmed, although he would have liked to explain it a different way.

The affirmation brought a barrage of grunts and moans as everyone jostled in their seats. Lane got up to leave. Vicky dropped her head to the table and folded her hands around her neck. Jodie rolled her eyes but maintained the cat that ate the canary smile. Only Celia and Kyle were motionless as they stared at Jordan.

“Sit down, Lane!” Celia commanded.

“Mom, you’re not seriously…”

“And shut up!” she demanded. “I hope we can all agree that this is not some ruse to lift our spirits, but instead a viable plan to save my baby.”

Jordan shook his head, acknowledging Celia’s assessment.

“So tell us what your plan is, Jordan,” Celia said. The sharpness in her voice was enough to make the kids settle back into their seats. Kyle nodded at Celia in approval, and Jordan took the floor again.

“First thing in the morning, after the kidnappers call, Kyle will drive us to the general location of the ship.”

“Us?” Alex asked.

“You, me, and Lane,” Jordan answered. “We will retrieve the ship and fly it to New Zealand.
