Chapter

13

They backtracked and got back on the trail when they left Rita’s so they could follow it all the way around the lake on that side. Cliff wasn’t sure what they were attempting to do exactly. The police and search teams had already gone over the park and surrounding terrain. But it felt good to be taking action. And now that everyone had left and things had quieted down, maybe whatever it was would show itself.

Like Jim, Cliff was scanning the ground around and near the water, stepping off the path occasionally to get a better look, hoping, praying, he didn’t find her, while at the same time wishing he would, so he could discover what happened and end this madness.

Despite what he’d heard from Rita, he still had difficulty believing some strange creature was responsible for the disappearances. There had to be a reasonable explanation. It could have been a rouge bear.

Even with the guns, he felt a chill at that, but he took comfort from the fact that at least it would be a rational, if gruesome, explanation for what happened to Tricia and the others.

But why hadn’t there been any blood or remains found if they were mauled and dragged off?

And what about the bluish light under the water? “What we need,” Cliff said loud enough for Jim to hear, “is a diver to go down and check out the bottom of the lake over by me.”

Jim looked back at him, panting slightly. “First things first. For now, how about we get past these campers and find a place to rest for a bit?”

They had managed to avoid most of the RV sites, but to get around the lake over here and back to their side of the park, they had to pass by some of the outer ones.

The old Winnebago still sat in the same spot. They trudged slowly by it. The wind was picking up, and like Jim, Cliff was ready to find a spot to kick back in and absorb everything they’d learned.

“Okay, from what I remember from the map of the park,” Cliff said a few minutes later, pausing and turning to Jim, who stopped beside him. “There’s a long section coming up before we hit the tent sites. We should be able to find somewhere private along there.”

“All right, sounds good.” Jim shifted around, wincing slightly. “I’ll be happy to get in that canoe later. I think I have blisters.”

“Well, look sharp. This part coming up is the most remote.” And the place the creature was most unlikely to be since it seemed to prefer water, thank goodness. “If there is a bear sticking close, it’s likely to be around here.”

HALFWAY ACROSS THE dense, uneven stretch, Jim, hugging the edge of the trail on the other side of him, came to a stop and took a step back. “Hey, look at this.” Pushing through the undergrowth, he started up the slope that ran alongside them.

Cliff walked over and followed him up what appeared to be the remnants of an even older trail than the one he and Pete had searched.
