Collette stood in the back of the bookstore, shelving a new order of books that had just been delivered. She straightened the shelves as she moved along and refiled some books that were in the wrong place. That happened when customers would grab a book to look at, but then not buy it. Sometimes they got put back in the wrong place. It was a constant battle to keep the books organized. She put a romance book back on the shelf in alphabetical order by authorâbecause she was certain that D came before F.
âHey, you.â
She couldnât help her wide smile as she twirled around to see Mark standing there with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. âMark, what are you doing here?â
âTaking a long weekend.â He grinned at her. âThought Iâd spend it with you.â
She threw her arms around him. âIâm so happy to see you.â She kissed him quickly, then glanced around to see if anyone was watching them. âBut I have to work this weekend.â
âI might have called Jody and asked if sheâd cover for you. Besides, you also have that new worker you just hired. You said she was catching on quickly, right? Jody said theyâd be fine. She was tickled youâd be taking some time off.â
âReally?â
âReally. Youâve just got the day shift tomorrow, then she has the weekend and youâre all mine. I hope you donât mind that I called her. I wanted to surprise you.â
âIâm not going to complain about that.â She took the flowers he handed her and buried her nose in them, reveling in their sweet yet spicy scent.
âGood, because I have plans. Going to happy hour at Blue Heron Cottages tomorrow. A beach day on Saturday, or we could go to some of those antique shops you like to browse through. Really, as long as Iâm with you, I donât care what we do. I got a room at Blue Heron Cottages, but I want to spend every waking moment with you.â
âIt all sounds wonderful. I miss you when youâre back at home.â She smiled up at him, memorizing his face as if she hadnât just seen him six days ago. âHowâs work going?â
âReally well.â His eyes lit up. âIâve had some new ideas for displays that are paying off. Mr. Mason hired two new workers, so thatâs why it was easier to get time off. He said that since Iâve hardly taken any time off in all the years Iâve worked at the hardware store, I should make up for lost time.â He brushed her cheek with a kiss. âSo I took him up on his offer.â
Jody walked up to them. âAhem, sorry to interrupt. I see you surprised her.â Jody grinned. âBut why donât you two lovebirds go ahead and leave? Spend some time together. Iâve got things here and Iâll lock up at closing time.â
âYou sure?â
Jody laughed. âIâm positive. All youâve done the last week is talk about Mark. Say how much you missed him.â
âShe did?â Now it was Markâs turn to grin.
