Once I decided that I would rest and dream, no matter the consequences, when I took a âlet the chips fall where they mayâ approach, ease, support, and clarity came quickly and easily. Radical faith is what grounds my life ethos and therefore it grounds how I study rest. Possessing extreme faith is a practice in living on the edge yet feeling tucked in and protected. Once you settle into it, you gain power from the feeling. You become magic. You can soar. You can dream.
I am hopeful that this Ministry is disturbing the idea that blinds us to the possibilities waiting for us on the other side of exhaustion. The more I have personally experimented with rest, the more I have been cracked open and expanded into what is truly possible. I have observed rest bring me back to myself in a way that feels natural and deeply connected. For close to ten years, I can consciously remember moving through life in a daze. The more we rest, the more we will wake up. If rest provided survival and held us during enslavement, during a time when our bodies were owned and families separated, why do we limit what it can do for us now? Why do we box it up and smother its resurrecting flames now? If rest is truly liberating, magical, and all-powerful, how dare we limit it by the lies of white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy, and ableism? I think we are living beneath our potential as divine beings with a body ready for freedom. I know that radical rest will save us if we let it. I know that allowing your mind the space to feel and daydream will change things.
For Black people who are descendants of enslaved Africans via the Transatlantic Slave Trade and chattel slavery, consider the fact that your Ancestors built this entire nation for free with their stolen labor. Use this knowledge to tap into what they have already done, so you donât have to grind yourself into oblivion now. Your Ancestors want to make space for your ease and rest. You must stop long enough to receive this insight in your dreams and downloads. I believe in the portal of resting; there are answers waiting for us there.
History is so important to the foundation of The Nap Ministry. Our remembering of history is nurtured by daydreaming. I am actively inspired by the justice work of the 1960s and, since I was a teenager, was obsessed with studying the history of the Civil Rights Movement, Kingian Nonviolence, Rosa Parks, and the scholarship of Malcolm X. While these paper mentorsâpeople you learn, gain inspiration from, and exchange ideas in a relationship centered on studying their writingsâpeople I never meet in person, offer great inspiration, my ability to embrace mystery, history, Spirit, and dreaming came from my grandma Ora. My family history shows up right alongside the curriculum I studied in school. Along with her modeling what it can look like to reimagine rest
