Chapter Twelve

Noel turned away from the door back toward the balcony. She slid the glass back and stepped outside. The air was warm, and there wasn’t much of a breeze. The overhang provided sufficient shade, so the brightness of the sun wasn’t blinding. Noel placed her palms on the stone banister and took a deep breath. Her shoulders dropped as she relaxed, simply enjoying the quiet and the fresh air. The view was so picturesque. Noel could see herself loving being in the space and spending some wonderful time there. It was nice to be there with Nicholas. That side of him she fell for in Denver, the side that she thought maybe temporary, seemed to be present and possibly not just a fling happening in the perfect isolated conditions. Just the thought of it brought a smile not only to Noel’s face but also registered in her heart. She didn’t even realize that she’d lifted her hands to her chest until she felt the beat of her heart under her hand.

Noel thought about what Nicholas said, that she should prepare herself so they could go out. She wasn’t sure how long he would be occupied, but Noel felt like she should at least start getting ready. As she turned towards the bedroom, something caught Noel’s eye. She paused, seeing another man in black just in her periphery. Noel was curious but not enough to keep her from entering the bedroom. She sat down on a bench in front of the bed and took off her shoes. The thickly carpeted floor felt good under her bare feet.

Lifting herself from the bench, Noel padded to the closet. Once there, she reached along the wall and turned on the overhead light. Her clothes were hung, her shoes were placed on a shoe rack, and those items that didn’t require hanging were neatly folded on open shelves.

I wonder did they put my underwear away? She laughed to herself embarrassedly. There was a dresser in the large closet. Noel walked over to the dresser and opened the first few drawers. There was nothing there. Okay, she thought to herself. Her carry-all was on a shelf, and her suitcase was balanced against a wall. She had placed her undergarments in the pocket of the suitcase. When she checked, her intimates were still there. Noel felt better handling those things herself. She wasn’t used to someone else attending to her things in that way. Truthfully, Noel wasn’t used to maids and chefs in the home – a marked difference between how she lived and how Nicholas lived.

Noel wanted to freshen up before picking out something to wear for the evening. Taking a moment to retrieve her cosmetic bag and toiletries from the carry-all, Noel made her way to the bathroom. The cool of the tile floors felt good on her feet, the stark difference between the carpet and tile not uncomfortable in the least. The bathroom was so luxurious, with complementary tones to the bedroom. Noel noticed a towel rack and a plush robe hanging next to it as she sashayed further into the space.
