Chapter 29- Fire and Blood

As Vex's sphere engulfed the flame jackal, I watched in awe as the two primal forces clashed. The inky blackness pulsed and writhed, struggling to contain the infernal power within. Flashes of crimson and orange light burst through the surface of the sphere like cracks in the earth during a volcanic eruption. The air around us crackled with energy. Forks of lightning crackled around the writhing mass of opposing powers, unbidden, adding to the din despite the clear but smoky skies. The hair on my arms stood on end.

The sphere expanded and contracted rhythmically, as if breathing. With each expansion, tendrils of darkness lashed out, seeking to smother any escaping flames. But Yeodirrath's fire was relentless. Geysers of flame erupted periodically, piercing through the inky veil like solar flares. The contrast between the absolute darkness and the searing light was mesmerizing and terrifying in equal measure.

The air warped around the conflicting energies. Waves of heat battled against the unnatural cold emanating from the darkness. Trees nearest to the sphere began to wither and twist, their bark blackening and peeling away, caught in the crossfire of elemental forces.

Vex stood firm, her small form silhouetted against the chaotic display. Her staff pulsed with a deep purple light, matching the rhythm of the sphere's contractions. She was panting, demonstrating the immense effort she was expending as the forest smoldered around her, in what was almost certainly a vain attempt to contain an Epic tier entity.

Recognizing the opportunity Vex had given me, I focused my will and called out to Urg. The familiar sensation of our connection strengthened, and I felt the welcoming surge of power as my eidolon materialized.

A deafening roar split the air. The sphere of darkness shattered like glass, fragments of shadow dissipating into the air. Yeodirrath burst forth, wreathed in flames that burned with renewed intensity. His eyes blazed with fury as he turned towards Vex.

"Impudent creature!" The hate practically oozed out of his words as he once again spoke into our minds. I felt dirty for being touched by it. “I should have killed all of your kind during the last cycle. This is what I get for my sloth, but fortunately, this is an oversight I can remedy!”

But Vex was ready. She waved her staff, producing a purple vortex of energy. I was certain it wasn’t strong enough to cause any harm.

Yeodirrath cackled like a hyena. “You expect this little puff of wind to do what, exactly? It barely—”

The ‘puff of wind’ crossed the remaining distance at blinding speeds, hitting the jackal in the chest, cutting off whatever he was about to say. The prince of hell spun a complete circle before crashing to the ground, twenty feet below. He tried to get airborne again, but Vex’s spell held him earthbound as surely as his chains had back in the dungeon where they found him.

The flame jackal howled. “What… what did you do, you cursed rabbit?”

Vex’s hands traced a sigil in the air in front of her, which glowed briefly before fading out.
