In 2012 Steve and Cindy got married and the most beautiful thing happened. Steve, Cindy and Natalie all became the best of friends. To this day they vacation together, celebrate family events together and love and respect each other dearly. Steve said, “I have to give her credit for sticking through all that crap, and we’re still friends. I don’t even know what I’ve put her through…. We had a wonderful young life, but I wasn’t much of a father at the end of the relationship because of the booze.”

The most wonderful outcome of this is that Steve has reclaimed his role as a loving and caring father to not only his own children but also Cindy’s. Cindy said, “One of the things that drew me to Steve was how much he loves his kids. He drops everything to help them. He’s like that with my kids too now.”

Steve is convinced that if he had not stopped drinking at 55, he would have never reached 60. He’ll be 68 years old in November (2020)! He said, “I had nothing in the last days of my drinking. Now, I’ve become sober, have my kids back, met Cindy and got married, have two houses, a boat, cars and I work happily at a great job. We’ve been to England, Scotland, cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska and vacations to Florida for a month at a time. My life has changed because I stopped drinking alcohol.”

I could see the joy in Steve’s eyes as he reflected on all that he has overcome, and how happy he is now. That joy took a sombre turn when I asked about the young woman who had led him to that pivotal AA meeting years ago. He reflected on why it was that he said yes to her invitation. He said, “Here was a young girl telling me that I had a problem and I needed help…” Steve’s eyes dropped to the floor, “Sadly, she passed away from a blood infection due to substance abuse four years ago. She was a wonderful person who was a gift to other people; however, sadly, she couldn’t save herself.”

Every year, Steve’s daughter Lauren asks him if she can share his story on social media. Steve says yes every year in hopes of helping even one person find their way back from alcoholism. When I asked Lauren why she is so set on sharing her father’s story each year, she said, “I’m super proud of him and I share it to show my continuous support for him. I want to show him that his sober life doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated even 12 years later. I never, ever dreamed that my dad would get sober. EVER. He was that bad. I want people to know it’s never too late and they do have a chance. There can be a light at the end of the tunnel with a GOOD life, if people can find the help and support they need.”
