The setting

The study explored active and organised participation with a group of Masters swimmers, involving in-depth one-to-one interviews with 13 key informants, overt observation of, and participant and autoethnographic involvement with the group over a two-year period, with fieldwork largely (but not only) based in a leisure centre situated in the south of England. It was also the researcher’s own place of work and therefore by nature it provided the opportunity to have regular and sustained contact with the swimmers, and immersion within the activities of the group. As was noted at the time, ‘closeness to the people and the phenomenon through intense interactions provides subjective understanding that can greatly increase the quality of qualitative data’ (Hutchings, 2014 p. 58). The ethnographic nature of the study was summed up by noting that:

Hence, it is through a prolonged investment in time spent in the cultural scene as both participant and researcher that I have been drawn into the Masters swimming community. Consequently, in physical terms, my research entailed total immersion in training routines and practice patterns and in emotional terms, it required an understanding of human behaviour, and personal experiences from the swimmers’ perspective.

(Hutchings, 2014, p. 11)
