Her life had gone from awesome to hell in a heartbeat.

Madison leaned against the metal bulkhead next to her seat, closing her eyes to shut out the sight of the prison transport. It was filled with women like her, in electro-cuffs and yellow prison jumpsuits. Half had the hard looks of hardened criminals ready to shiv someone in a back corridor over a wrong look. The other half looked like she felt—terrified and like the world had imploded around them. Like this was a nightmare and they just had to hang in long enough, and then they’d wake up. Someone somewhere behind her moaned softly.

“Please, I shouldn’t be here.”

She’d been waiting for days… ever since she’d been arrested on the Defiant. So far no luck on the waking up part though. She sighed, trying to get comfortable against the metal wall. Perhaps get some sleep. She hadn’t had much in the last few days.

“I’m innocent. Please, you have to believe me.”

Thrown into a cell, the bright lights and noise of the brig had given way only briefly to a closed courtroom where she’d been charged and convicted of vote rigging and “crimes against humanity” with a speed that had made her head spin. Before she knew what was happening, she’d been thrown onto this transport.

“Hey… Blondie. Whatcha do?”

Madison opened her eyes at the query. The speaker was the woman in the seat directly opposite. With her hair shaved close to the scalp and ritual gang scarification on her cheek, she was one of the “hardened criminal” group aboard.

“War crimes,” Madison said, keeping it short and sweet.

The ganger’s eyes widened. “No shit… you? You look too posh for shit like that. Like a duchess or something... War crimes? What you do? Blow up a buncha people?”

“Someone help me.”

“Thousands,” Madison dead-panned, her resting bitch face in full force. She wasn’t an idiot. A place like this? She couldn’t afford to show any weaknesses or fear. “Tens of thousands.”

“Please. My name is—”

“Oh for fuck’s sake!” Anger flared in the ganger’s eyes as she yelled across the cabin. “No one cares, honey. We’re all fucking innocent here and no one gives a flying fuck. So pipe the fuck down, okay?”

Turning back to Madison, the ganger nodded, respect in her eyes. “Cool beans, duchess. Rage against the machine that wants to keep us all in boxes.”

Duchess. For a moment Madison’s lips wanted to curl. She’d have been a lady if she’d stayed with Danaar aboard the Veral’vias. A Latharian warrior’s lady. Danaar… The ragged hole where her heart had been ached savagely. She’d been so gung-ho to get back and get to the bottom of what Radcliffe and Hopkins had been up to that she hadn’t seen the trap until it had been sprung. The instant she’d stepped off that shuttle and seen the welcoming committee of marines ready to arrest her, she’d known she only had one move left.

Cameron Murphy. Her scorched earth policy. The only problem was that by calling in that marker, she lost any chance of getting herself out of this.
